i'd ditch it all and get a mp3 cd player; any music you like, 10 albums on one cd, usb input, aux input, and face off. i had a period panasonic tape deck (probably original) and the sound was crap compared to the new one. when it started chewing up the tapes id made that was the final straw.

i got a sony cdx-gt33u, under a ton from halfords, probly 50 quid off the net, looks fine in the car nothing gaudy

Modern but with an old school twist. I would have bought a changer if they didn't exchange hands for near 100 secondhand!

No longer in the Porker now mind you (but instead my 306 after the Blaupunkt decided to play funny buggers on the ejector mechanisn)

Might still try the Sony head unit this weekend.
