Hi Mike,

Following your advice, i have logged on and it looks like i wont have to post a question about your car as the first thread i have stumbled upon happens to be about how great your 944 is!!

As i think i explained, I was meant to be buying an s2 but of another variety, a Lotus elise 135r which had been very well looked after, with only7k on the clock! However, having proposed in NY at Xmas realistically i am in no situation to be spending 15k.

I am determined not to ever do another year of my life without something quick and fun, and having reassessed the car market, it was one of my friends Ed (Northo on Pistonheads) up here in scotland who has a white 944, and pointed me this direction. I have to say i have always wanted a Porsche, as does every little boy during childhood, however running costs have always put them way far to the back of my mind, at least until i can justify them!

However, Ed assures me that it is not all that bad on the 944, and if i bought a good car, i would be suprised. Now having no experience of driving a 944, i am slightly worried about ownership costs, and also very inquisitive about the whole driving experience! I have been told that the 3l 4 cyclinder engine is brilliant and the drive is not quite on par with a lotus, but the 944 offers lots, and a really good car for the twisties as well.

Mike's car i spotted yesterday on PH and it kind of speaks for itself, however the mileage does scare me a little, but should it i guess? As Mike points out it is 18 years old, and more importantly was Mike's statement on the ad saying nothing needs done, so i would rather pay a higher price for a car that should be trouble free!

Anyway any advice anyone has is muchly appreciated, and apologies for hijacking someone else's thread!

Cheers,

David

A 944 S2 is a lot of fun - it may not be as fast as some cars out there but if you really "toe it" there will not be many who will stay with you on a nice bendy country road. Running costs will depend on how many miles you plan to drive in it.
Servicing costs at a good independent should be comparable with a Mondeo or similar although certain parts will cost more (eg clutch)

Don't worry about mileage - if a car has been serviced properly with regular oil changes etc it should be good for 200,000 without any major re-build. Unless you get unlucky!

I purchased mine with 127k on the clock at the end of June 2007. She's now almost at 141k so that's 14,000 miles in 7 months. No problems so far - just more fun commuting :D

If you use an S2 regularly for a good 10,000 miles a year then it tends to work out at around £1000 a year to cover all mechanical work and MOT's. This will include items that wear out due to useage like brakes, belts and water pump and also items that periodically wear out due to age like shocks, brake lines, fuel pipes. An S2 only needs a service once a year or 12,000 miles and this will cost £200 - £300 depending on which specialist you use.

I've had my own car for nearly 10 years and added 84,000 miles to it's 180,000 total and it has averaged out to £1100 a year which included a lot of brakes for track useage in te early days. As you are on Pistonheads take a look at the fleet section here http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/members/fleet.asp sort it by Porsche with the most history and you will find quite a few 944 owners keeping logs of running costs

Thanks guys, really positive response so far, my only concern is having a Discovery to shift first, as i found Mike's car about two weeks too early! The other half isn't over the moon about me selling her car, but i am similarly not too chuffed about having to fork out 20k on a wedding, and not buying the Elise!

Anyway, i think my next step is to call Mike and find the cash sharpish!!

keep the responses coming!

Thanks,

David :D
