How long did you run it for. If it's been left standing for long enough the oil can drain out of them. Can take some time at tickover to pump up again. Would need an oil change as well by the sound of it. But if it needs new tappets Jims right. Would need a head ovrhaul at the same time so budget £1500 worst case.

I have the same tappety noise from my car and it does not go away after driving. I had it at the garage yesterday and the mechanic thinks I have a duff hydraulic lifter. He needs to take the cover off and possibly camshaft out to test them to be 100% sure. He wasn't suggesting changing them all, just the broken one, so may be a bit cheaper than what was previously mentioned. I have seen the lifters on eurocarparts.com for £20 each, so not too bad. Anyway, an engine flush and oil change would hopefully fix it if they are just dirty. You might also try an oil treatment. I tried Forte Top End Treatment which I got off eBay. Didn't work for me because I think mine is broken but would be worth a shot. Good luck convincing the wife!

Collected it this morning and the warmer it got the less tappety it sounded so hopefully it's nothing too serious. My wife has even (luke)warmed to it and has even gone as far as saying she might like driving it so things are looking up! :D

Thats great. Enjoy :) Nothing too light oil wise. It will just use a lot. I'm on 5/40 Synthetic Fuchs from German French Swedish. But mines only done 30K since a full rebuild. They also do a 15/40 Semi Synthetic that may suit it better. Discount for Club membership. :D

Since the previous posts I've had the car checked over, its had a top end flush through and its got quieter as presumably the oil is now reaching the bits it previously couldn't. It sailed through the MOT today with no probs. As a precaution I'm going to get my son to replace the tensioner pads as they're a cheap preventative job which might save an expensive failure but hopefully regular use will bear fruit.

I've now been through the history file and it turns out it's been a pampered pet with lots having been spent on a new hood, new rear discs, a new clutch and of course the all important belts, etc. about 3,000 miles/2 years ago. Now I need to get to the bottom of the electric hood not working, odd scratches on the bodywork and a bit of cracking in the leather seats sorting and the alloys refurbing and then it'll be spot on.

Oh and the colour is Maritime Blue now that I've checked the paint code.

I'll post some pics when I get chance.
