The fumes will be entering somewhere around the exhaust tail pipe, assuming that the exhaust is not blowing.

Crossed wires, the exhaust fumes enter through the tailgate seal, it's worse when the sunroof or window(s) are open because of negative pressure inside the car.

Make sure they'll give you TIPEC discount not all will. OPC Tonbridge & Exeter definitely do.And Tonbridge will try & price match.

Hi Andy,

I've just seen the pics of the boot seals - they're in bad shape. There is a 2 page section on setting up the boot latches in The Haynes manual for the 944. If you don't have a copy, I'll try to scan the pages and send them onto you.

Thanks Ben would be helpfull. Ordered seal for hatch area and one that looks like it should fit around the lock area, have you got this part on your car (pictured below). I've been meaning to get a manual which I should really if I'm going to start this self maintenence/restoration game :) I think I've adjusted the locks correctly but think I will need to do them again when new seal fitted.

Thanks

Andy

Yes, you need that (one each side)! It's "entertaining" fitting it into the hole, lubrication helps, fnaar, fnaar.

Also, the new hatch seal should come as a continuous loop and it is possible to fit without cutting it.

The join on mine is at the bottom, but at the top would make more sense.

More sense for fumes but less for rainwater ingress ?

I would keep the join at the bottom and if you cut carefully you can get both ends to meet almost seamlessly you can then insert a piesc of rubber tube about 1/4" OD into either end which helps keep the water out of the join. I bought my hatch pin lock seals which is the item you have shown for around £14each but I do have a set of used ones which look better than those in your car which you could have for the price of postage. As stated if you rub some washing up liquid onto the pin lock seals it helps when trying to get them into place.

Used Porscheshop in end to get rear hatch seal, both lock pin seals and delivery, £75.00 with member discount :) Berlyn and design 911 wanted around £70 for the hatch seal alone. Got a haynes manual at same time for £19.00. Have tried downloading the Cannells site manual twice and doesn't want to do it. Comes up with an "corrupt error" message each time, maybe it's the slow 'tinternet' speeds we get out here in the country. Little project to do over the weekend hopefully if car comes back from JMG on Saturday with the oil leak fixed. I've printed off all your little 'tips' to help on the way to a hopefully fresh smelling cabin again. The old girl is slowly coming together. :D :D

Big thanks again for advice :bounce:

Andy

Well how rude was that thread, better not let the wife see it. Here's some slightly edited extracts put together... what do you guys have on your minds!!

When giving it a bit of welly, should I look at seals or ventilation ducting? Gotta sort it out before I pass out. I could run some talc onto the body & Vaseline on the seal & see where it does & doesn't touch, it's "entertaining" fitting it into the hole, the lubrication helps. The join on mine is at the bottom, you can then insert a piece of rubber tube about 1/4" OD into either end, and if you rub some washing up liquid onto it it helps when trying to get them into place.

The old girl is slowly coming.....

I'll get my coat....
