How does this ride height adjustment effect handling?
Our cars are applauded for handling....Does this do it a injustice?

Its a very subjective subject with no simple answer. However, the inherent design of these cars is where the well reputed handling acclaim comes from. Its a good chassis with excellent weight distribution so the handling characteristics will always be good. With the standard factory setup these cars are extremely capable and fun to drive on the road, and also very comfortable and will be more than adequate for an occasional track session. If you don't want anymore than that from your car, don't change it just drive and enjoy it. There are too main reasons for modifying any cars suspension
i) to change the cars handling characteristics (general to meet a specific requirement like more focused for track use, less body roll, quicker steering response ect)
ii) to change the look of a car, its "stance", has a big influence on the visual effect of a vehicle such as making it look sportier, more aggressive etc

So in answer to your question, what are you going to use your car for? and are you happy with the way it looks?

both cars look very nice.

whats the difference between reindexing and adjusting? My 944 was already lowered before I got it (though it was suspect on the quality of the job)

Re-indexing requires removal of the torsion bar spline and re-seating it to suit how low, or high, you want the car. This normally requires the whole back end to be dropped to facilitate this. There is eccentric adjustment also available without the need for dropping back end out but this is only small adjustment and can sometimes be maxxed out from the factory in any case. You can be lucky or unlucky there.

thank you for explaining that, is there a guide to re-indexing?

There are several on the web. Try Clarkes Garage. Its a fairly lengthy process, and hardwork as all components are pretty heavy.

So here it is after fitting the Spax lowering springs to the front and raising the rear with the spring plate adjustment. Looking much better and much more level and actually riding much better as well. Cant wait for Tuesday when the geometery gets setup properly.

Thought I would add a before and after, what it looked like at the end of last year and now, in terms of wheels, suspension and stance. I must have just polished it in the first pic lol

Looks the nuts now! Far too standardy before lol! Should go well after geo set-up. Take care with speedbumps!

Never been keen on the back being higher than the front. Low and level for me.

looks good

with regards to the back being higher than the front, an old coupe quattro of mine was like that, I didn't get around to fitting the rear lowering springs but it went well enough and turned in a hell of a lot quicker than before

Thats the suspension set-up properly now, handles like a dream now. Chap that did the alignment was very complementary of my refurbishment work "looks like a work of art under there, pleasure to work on", always nice to be appreciated :D
