Short of going to porsche, any idea where I can get a main pilot bearing and the rubber one to go around it at the back of the flywheel?

Thanks,

Will

First afternoons work done.

Managed to get the air box, fuel rail, inlet manifold, distributor bits and starter motor off. Starter motor took about two hours due to horrendously tight bolts and having to resort to a hammer to break it off.

Planning on an out the top job, so need to remove the bell housing bolts, engine mounts and flywheel bolts... Can anyone give me a tip with the wiring harness? Struggling to see where I need to unplug it as very few wires seem to make it to the engine..

Not looking forward to plumbing in the inlet manifold again, might need to look over Google for that!

Fuel rail where the line bolts in seems to be slightly twisted, will get a photo tomorrow but should I be woriried?

Managed to get in another 3 hours today.

Removed pressure plates through starter. Motor hole, drained and removed radiator, engine mount bolts and exhaust at first joint below manifold.

I've come to a problem, the bellhousing bolts! Ive removed on from under the car, to the right hand side. Ive started getting the one off from above the car in the centre, but just cannot see how I'll get to the other two which don't seem to have enough space for a socket. They're so tight I can't imagine a spanner will do it!

Any tips?

An hour yesterday finally got the engine out, not before breaking the sensor bracket..

Does these mean I'll have to gap them when it goes back together?

It looks as though I have oil leaks from the two balance shafts and also the rear main seal. I've also realised why it was running cool... There's no bloody thermostat!

More updates when more parts come in.. Will upload some pics later on.

Just put a penny under the sensor when you refit that should give you the right air gap

Managed to steal another few hours today, after a month off ( 3 weeks waiting for a thermostat seal!)

Pictures include the old water pump sans thermostat, the new one with the thermostat now fitted, rear leaky main seal and then the new one fitted.

I've also added some photos of my sensors, do they look bent to you!? And if so, is there any way they would work in that state?

I'm leaning towards not sorting out the balance shaft seals this time, purely because it'll add another few hundred pounds and another week or two off the road - is this likely to cause me a serious issue!?

Timing belt - any way of doing this without the tool? Not quite sure how I could do it otherwise and not willing to spend hundreds on a tool I'll use once!

Pressure plate - how do I remove this without it springing out and smash me in the balls? Is this through the threaded tube on the belhousing? I remove the engine and clutch through the starter motor hole, so there aren't many tutorials on this.

Will keep you all updated!

Hoping to get a few more hours tonight - my workshop is al fresco - so it better not rain too hard!

Saw a nice 944 at the Cobham roundabout today on the A3 - Guards Red - wasn't Jason by any chance?

I drove round that roundabout in my black 944 on Sunday last. Small world.

Now the suns out I've seen more 944s, saw I nice red convertible in co ham yesterday followed by a 30's style race car. I was out on my little 1972 Vespa super, probably looking like a dick but it makes me smile!

I've just managed to crumble my water pump gasket getting it out of the packet! Will a loctite type sealant do the job here? Reluctant to wait for another week for some cardboard....

If you have a sharp craft knife you could make your own from gasket paper. Oil and water proof, available in various thicknesses in A4 sheets. Its got me sorted out on more than one occasion and I now keep a few sheets as I live in a pretty rural location without easy access to suppliers. Most good accessory shops should stock, so you ought to be able to find a sheet or two tomorrow.

Thanks Rob,

I ended up using locative premium grey silicone - if you believe the packet they're perfect for water pumps, so I ended up giving it a go!

Slit dilemma, my balance shaft housings on both sides seem to be leaking. The engine is covered in a layer of dirty oil anyway, but it seems that the areas around the top hats are wet.

Now, today I have just finished with a new rear main il seal, pilot bearing, timing and balance belt pulleys and belts and also put in new needle bearings to the clutch fork. Mentally I was in putting it back together mode.... Is it really £150 per side for the seal kits and do I really have to do them now? Just want to drive the thing and don't want to undo a days work!

Will
