If by ' the top cap ' you mean the plastic bit with the gearshift pattern on it , then I used one of those small screwdrivers used for adjusting specs to lever it out - you might tear the leather on the old gaitor , but you're replacing it anyway!!To fit the cap back after you've changed the gaitor , press very hard with your thumbs!!( Make sure it's in the right plane first - ask me how I know!! )

Yep, the cap with the gear pattern on it was the bit that seemed tricky to me - thanks for the advice. Will try and have a go at the weekend!
