not talking about tyres though and even then a new old stock thirty year old tire wouldnt just blow out on its first run and a belt sitting in a cupboard isn't going to deteriorate spectaularly.

anyway from my experience belts dont just break (ok yes they do but) the 4 failures I'm familiar with personally (having fixed the cars) were; water pump bearing failure, roller failure x2 and incorrectly tensioned belt.

what tends to happen is that a new belt is generally at a higher tension than the old one putting a strain on any old components, the component fails and the belt is killed, or its not fitted right!

I'll go along with that theory too, either it was a faulty belt or incorrectly tensioned , due to the fact that the water pump , rollers , tensioners, Belts, sleeves etc were all brand new . Before I had all the work done, when the engine was cold I used to hear the "whiring" sound you got from the belts, now depending who you spoke to some said this was normal , others said it was not, but when I got all the new belts on that sound disappeared so I thought that the. " whiring " sound maybe wasn't normal , however since getting the car back this week the " whiring " sound has returned, so maybe the belt wasn't correctly tensioned which led to belt failure after all. ?
