My early car is a neglected rat of a car but it still does things with corners the S2 won't do, although the S2 has given me a few huge grins lately.

I really need to hire a car for a day I've forgotten what a normal car drives like I've used the early car as daily transport for 6 years so I probably don't appreciate the drive of either car as much as I should.

Keep the early car that must be a tight drive after the money you've spent on it, if you buy an S no matter how much has been spent on it you'll want or need to refresh other parts just to bring it up to what your early car is already.

Thanks for the responses guys,

I saw a 16v S on Ebay (111200501890) at what looks like a reasonable price. I had an 'S' a few years ago...about 10 actually...which I remember enjoying - also had a 911 and a couple of 928's at the same time so did not use it much.....so I just thought why not.

However, the car on e-bay is running on 18" wheels and I prefer standard on the 944, but it seems reaonably sound. The only problem is space as i've just bought the Jag' which takes up the space on the drive with the wifes car meaning only one space in the garage! Otherwise I'd keep both.

Looks like the Lux has another stay of execution, I might even get the ding in the front wheel arch done afterall...or maybe I'll buy the S as well and park it on the road.....doh

Jon

Well for closure...i fretted over which way to jump...or if I should just buy it. I watched the auction to the end and the car eventually sold for a measly £1200; which answered my question really...I didn't bid because £1200 would go a long way to cover the average yearly running costs plus sorting out the 'ding' in the front wing plus a new clutch kit, a new headlining and a recovered dash.

That would turn move the car from a good square dash on to an exceptional one.....and I guess after 7 years I am kind of attached to the old girl now.

......oh and having jut bought the Jag I think the boss may have complained about another car on the drive...just a little

So she stays and the spending continues :D

Test drive each and decide what you want...

I am thinking of building myself an unusual specification trackday car, which would probably horrify most trackday 944 owners, but I am building it to be fun, not fast.. To me, it will be great, but so someone who commutes, it might be horrid, and to someone else it may be good fun.

Everyone has different needs, and I would not say a Turbo is better than an S2, like I would not say a S is better than a lux.. Horses for courses and all that :)

In your shoes I would stick with the early car. They are wonderful things to drive IMO with the lack of weight really aiding the driving experience and aiding that classic feel.

Drive an S and see what you think though :). I wonder how much the cam timing is within spec on most Ss out there. Sure they may never possess the low down grunt of the S2s, but that's not to say they can be a total loss. On many moderns it has surprised me what a difference it can make, even on cars as feeble as a Clio 1.5 DCi, where it seems to make a world of difference the overall drivability.

Surely they must/be almost on a par regarding the low down pull when compared to a 951, which is semi flat before 3k (in 250 form) (OK it will move, but not in a hurry like an S2)!

Cam timing is something I want to check on my S, as you say, this is something that may have been a little out, but how often does anyone get it checked?

Shame you can't alter the inlet & exhaust timing independantly, had to wait for the S3 for that!
