This might qualify as a historic entrant under current rules. Werent they talking about including up to 1986 cars?

Had I know that this car was for sale then Id certainly have bought it. I have a set of light grey / grey-beige leather series two seats from an '86 Turbo and a perfect dash that would have perked it up nicely...

The new Cat 4 historic rally category is fine for this car.

Cat 1 - pre December 31st 1967
Cat 2 - Jan 1st 1968 - Dec 31st 1974
Cat 3 - Jan 1st 1975 - Dec 31st 1981
Cat 4 - Jan 1st 1982 - Dec 31st 1986

These are all MANUFACTURED dates, not registered, so worth checking VIN plates and working it out.

How can I check when it was manufactured?

The VIN gives you the year of manufacture only. To get the date you need to speak to Porsche. They'll normally give you a build date via email for nothing but do charge a fee for the little certificate jobby that they do.

The VIN actually shows the model year, not the year of manufacture. The model year starts in September and ends in July/August.

Example: 944 series two - 1986 model year. G model year indocator in the VIN and built between September 1985 and July 1987.

The 1986 cut-off was introduced then? How easy is it to find events which accept entrants? I think that theres a reasonable chance that this car will qualify as a category three historic, considering that it is an X reg.

I hardly ever look at the 'for sale' sections on either forum, unfortunately.

I think it is being introduced for the 2014 season so essentially MSA compliant from Jan 1st.

This car couldn't run in Cat 3 unless it can be proved to be a 1981 manufacture. The registration plays no part in scrutineering, they want the paperwork.

Oh nothing, you can have it. Will dig it out over the weekend.

As for build numbers, mine is 00102.

I realise that. My point is that being an X registration, that it has a reasonable chance.

Can you comment on this thread Ben?

Every historic rally scrutineering that I've done, and has been a lot (!), they never even consider the registration. You enter an tell them model/year and they issue you a number. Then you have to get the car numbered up and to scrutineering where they will look over everything, usually starting with paperwork.

As for the PH thread, yep, will do so now.

We seem to be talking at crossed purposes!

My point was that with an X registration there is a very good chance that the vehicle will turn out to be eligible. There was high demand and Porsche struggled to supply, so the cars came straight from Stuttgart or Neckarsulm to Reading and were registered - so sitting around for months unsold.

I had wondered what the craic was with yours, as its a very early car but registered on a Y. Was it originally an X which was then re-registered?

I'm such a retard sometimes.

Yes, that would be perfectly plausible!

As for mine on the Y plate, in the midst of finding that out! Will report back when confirmed.

That should have read 'no sitting around' not 'so sitting around'.

As Im sure that youre aware, until the introduction of the registration prefix, you could re-register a car whenever you liked, so its possible that this happened.

AFN/PCGB will know what the original registered number and date of purchase was. You can get this for free through the Porsche Club, or buy paying (I think) £60-odd - you did used to be able to get it for free but not any longer...
