i always white dot the timing marks before taking anything off.... turn the engine over by hand acouple of revolutions when its reassembled.....the dots are easier to see when its back to the starting position....

but at least i know where i can get one. Its the tool for the job though, fits into the same bolt holes as the starter ahh i see.
And the teeth lock the flywheel. Simple effective but £70!!

I stripped my S down some more and have felt the tensions on the timing belt and balance belt. I had hoped the balance belt
was going to be on the tight side, but as previous, I can freely spin the idler with the belt just resting on it.


The timing belt i checked by this rule of thumb.



At the bottom of the water pump belt shield, i can just touch it with the belt.





At the top i cannot, its too taught to deflect this much.


My belts are pefectly tensioned going by these rules of touch and feel. But i have the classic whine sound. Which might be idler bearing noise instead?

That sounds exactly like mine, which has new belts on. However, I didn't do the change, I have to hope the garage I bought it from did it well.

Ive commited myself to pulling the belts so ive bought this tool. I shall set the engine to TDC going by these timing marks, which i havnt yet found on my S. Good idea with the tip ex, once im at TDC ill put a spot on the flywheel.











Then release tension, pull the belts and get the pump off. I wonder if the pump could be making the whine?

I bought my 944 and 968 flywheel locks from OPC Exeter both were a lot cheaper than Porsche shop at the time.

S enjoying the dismanterling process. In this case cut the cable ties and most of the front came apart.

Whats supposed to be here, this hose became visable when i removed the airbox, one end went into the box itself but the
end with the clip? looks like there should be something attached to it? i cant see anything obvious anyone anyone?





The casing, should this part come off without having to pull the pulley? Advice please.

I see someone has already touched it up with tip ex handy! Not many 924's with a spring tensioner

You will have to remove the alternator belt, then the cover will come off. Not sure what those pipes go to, its been a while since i saw a 2.5 na.
It may be the angle of the bottom photo but the idler pulley for the balance belt actually looks like its putting the belt under tension, that would certainly make it whine.

Thanks dude, will get the drive belt off, that pulley does look like its tensioning against the belt at that angle, but thats the one i checked i could spin freely, i will check it again though thanks.
