Got it fired up today, straight off once I swapped the reference sensors over. Running really nice with initial oil pressure of justunder 5 bar dropping to 4 as warmed up using a mineral 10-40w oil. The exhaust from ASS sounds superb especially in a confined single garage.
Slight vibration with the solid engine mounts but not to bad at all.
Just need to run it up to tempature again before first oil change then give her a little spin up the road.

Cheers Mark. I will be needing those arches of you for more traction soon ! I did attempt to put up a video from my iPhone but as we were still using ' slide rules' when I went to school, these modern gadgets get the better of me.

Can u remind me of the company you used for the vapor blasting please. Got all the components ready for the rs2 and so would like to drop them off. Regards

Well done Simon - progress at last :D

How many miles will you do before the first mineral oil chage?

Hi Nick, manifold working well with no leaks. I use 'Trestans' in Southampton for all aqua blasting and powder coating. I would have said speak to Chris but he broke his leg last week and is off for a few weeks, so have a word with Andy the owner who happens to have a very nice low mileage 85 944.
Paul first oil change will have been after about 20 mins having run it up to tempature, which will be replaced with more mineral oil. The engine will then be run for about 2 hours on stands with a light load of between 2-3000 revs with a couple of heat cycles, before swapping out for 10-60 mobil 1. This is for a steel lined engine. People have lots of different ideas on running the engine in and this is just mine. With the alusil block it will be slightly different as it is just the rings you are trying to seat and I would have to ask people more experienced than me.

Your engine, your rules :). Personally I'd run it in on the road unless I had a very big fan to get plenty of air through the radiator considering the shallower water jackets S2 blocks have...

Well engine was run in and car is with Tom at the moment to set up the fueling and hopefully have some bhp figures after the weekend fingers crossed.
In the meantime started to build up another 3 litre turbo engine for my road car using the refurbed 2.7 head and the block we bored and rehoned. Not going for massive power with this and will use the k26/8 to boost early. Very nervous day first sizing and filing rings to bores with out scratching them and then fitting pistons and rings again without catching anything but all seems to have gone well. Got to mention the difference in strength of the Total seal rings compared to original to compress is huge, doesnt make fitting them easy. Also trying out a Cometic head gasket for the first time. I know people have had problems with these, but needed a tiny increase in compression and as both surfaces are immaculate thought we would give it a go.
Its probably taken 3 months getting things machined , cleaned, blasted and plated but it makes putting it together so much more pleasurable.

What a fantastic thread, I'm very jealous of your abilities. I know how you feel when the motor went pop. 4 days before a race at Zandvoort many moons ago my crank broke on the rolling road. Luckily I had a spare car and did the race, first into Tarzan and last out, front brake line fractured and the car was stuck on the kerb. Marshalls pushed me off and I did finish with rear brakes only and no oil pressure still got the baseball cap but no trophy.

Thanks Endoman, unfortunately I never had the time, money or talent to go racing. Much safer for everyone if I keep to track days !
There is a distinct lack of photos being posted recently on this site so I thought would put a couple more up of what I achieved Saturday with the 8 valve nearly back together with nice shiny yellow cam cover this time. Decided to give these semi solid engine mounts a go. These are sold as being for 924/944 but when I offered them up to the engine mounts the bolts would not fit being M10. As I had a few spare mounts I drilled them out and elongated the holes to get them to fit. Don't buy these if you want a straight swap.
Just waiting for a tap for the balance shaft cover oil feed to turbo ( strange size M13 x 1.5 ? ) and should have it all back together in another day, by then I should have the results back on the other car from Tom.

Simon,
You much be able to assemble these engines with your eyes closed, I think this is your third? They seem to get better looking each time also (really like the yellow cam tower). What can I say very nice as usual.
What way have you finished the block? Just water blasted or painted?
Also who do you use for plating?
From memory the turbo oil feed line is M14x1.5.
Cheers
Rob

Thanks Rob, I can't take all the credit though, most of the assembling is done by my friend Nick who has spent a lot of time working on 944 race cars.
The block and engine parts are just aqua blasted then coated with Corrosion x to help keep them clean and preserve them. I use a local plating company in Alton, nr Winchester, sadly this has led to me choosing a different bolt to use for a part just because it is shinier than the other !! As for the oil feed , I have checked and rechecked the measurement for the banjo size and it does seem to be m13 x1.5.
Yes this is the third build, this one for the road car. I have one more block and a couple of s2 heads and cranks to do one final engine that is why I am following your own build with interest. I love the idea of ITB's.

I meant all the engine aluminium parts are aqua blasted, the block I took to Modus Engineering in Kent who have a hot tank where the core plugs are removed and it is dipped so all the oil galleries are cleared and the block comes out like new. They also did my heads, highly recommended.

Seem to have lost the photos on the thread so will stick up a couple more.
Finished of the 8v engine rebuild with the refurbished K26/8 by Turbodynamics down in Christchurch who changed out the shaft and although they found a small crack on the inside of the hotside housing it looked old and said it shouldn't get any worse . Apparently very common on the kkk of this age.
Then started work removing the old engine from the car . This is an 86 turbo with 210,000 on the clock which has been dry stored in a barn for a number of years . Prior to going into storage a Promax level 3 chip was fitted with n LR 60-1 turbo and LR wastegate and a large bill from Promax for £3000 just for the parts ! Unfortunatly there is no record of bearings being replaced or other internal maintenance although a large file for general maintenance . I find it strange people spend large amounts of money on go faster parts without refreshing the engine.
Although the car was running when bought it was smoking and the oil was contaminated with oil with a lot of oil in the intercooler pipes and intercooler. So I swapped the head for another with new head gasket and did the oil cooler seals although proved to have been recently replaced. This calmed down the smoke but a small knocking could be heard which was either engine mounts or rod bearings. Not relishing the prospect of doing either with the engine in the car, I decided to put the newly built 3 litre 8 valve turbo motor in the car. This will be used just for the road .
Hope to have the old engine out by next weekend. Also refurbished the torque tube ready to go in and cleaning up the suspension. I copied an idea from Rennlist by making up a semi solid gearbox mount with some liquid polyurethane as all the parts were there just the rubber has delaminated. Not sure on the orange , maybe use some pigment next time.

Looking good Simon. Have u got any power figures for the 16v engine yet?

Also do u happen to have a gearbox hanger (the steel member that goes across the chassis rails)

regards
