Hi there. I'm new here, have just bought an '86 944 Lux Oval dash car with a few issues... The main and most annoying one is that the drivers door drops when you open it - quite a lot! I've tried playing with the 4 bolts on the A post that attach the hinges to the door, but they make no difference at all. Any further suggestion would be great! :) I'll then move on to ask about the other problems the car has... :?

Thanks

Sounds like it needs new hinge pins. These are available as is the hinge plate that fits to the door.

Hinge pin part number is 321 831 421 and they are £4.06 plus VAT each from Porsche.

Ah right - nice. Thanks guys. Think I should just get 2 of them and change both? Is it a relatively easy job to do?

Cheers :D

Not sure Dave, normally it is unbolt the hinge & drift the old one out & bash a new one in. The other option is to ream the holes out & get some over size ones made up.

I bought some pins but never fitted them after reading that it's a plastic type bush the pin fits in that wears rather than the pins, and I didn't fancy taking the door off to fit the bushes.

Just been out to the car again to assess the hinges in more detail. I took off the door card to look inside the door too. I then undid the 4 hinge bolts completely, took off the door strap and lifted the door away from the car slightly. I can't work out how to detach the wiring loom to move the door away from the car completely though! Anyway. Point being, as I was messing with it and then putting it back on again, I noticed that the bottom hinge appears to 'move' slightly inside the door :shock: I was under the impression that this was welded to the door frame!?! I think this may be my problem, rather than the pins which look ok when I apply movement to the door. I'm guessing that if I'm right, this may be beyond economical repair so to speak, as it'll mean either a new door sourced, or taking it off and re welding it - either of which don't sound easy or cheap! Any thoughts...?

Have you an update on this problem? I think my hinge might be loose inside the door.

How did you get on?

yes it does sound like the case. On my MGB the door hinges had a long shaft (with elongated fixing slots) that went into the door and had 2x bolts that allowed in/out adjustment of the door to align the shuts. The 944 must have a similar arrangement to allow some adjustment surely.? Ask Alastair . He's bound to know.

Welcome to the madhouse Dave ! :roll:

HELP! My '92 s2 is in the bodyshop just now having sills maintained and some paintwork. They've offered to resolve the slight door drop too which isn't actually too bad but nevertheless annoying!

Passenger side. The movement is on the fixing within the door and not on the fixing from the door to the car.
I'm getting somewhat confused.

http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-part ... 4453100501

This link has a diagram with part numbers.

Questions;
1) Are all 944s the same? ie no change in fittings/fixings between models?
2) So, I can see the hinge pin as quoted above. Only one needed?
3) Where are the bushes? Or is this the "hinge half"?

I'd really appreciate some experienced advice here!

as i said last year your diagram confirms. There are two hinges with bracket and pin parts 4,5 & 6 x2of each
The metal bar beneath part 4 & 5 is the part that goes inside the door. Its part of the door assembly and doesn't appear to be available seperately.
Your garage will know how to sort it. You could either buy parts 4,5 & 6 and hope that 2x new brackets and pins will tighten it up sufficiently or you'll need to ream out the door brackets and re-bush them to original tolerance then maybe shim the door brackets and hinges to raise the door slightly. I can see no benefit from dismantling the door unless the metal bars going into the door are actually loose within the door.

Thanks peanut.

I will visit the boyshop tmrw and have a chat. I don't have the car at home so it's difficult to refer back to the diagram & inspect the car. I thoroughly understand re the door pin (5) and the half hinge (4) -which incidentally appears to include a bush and this could be the issue;

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod12591 ... 944---968/

Not cheap to resolve at £80 for parts - if this is the issue (£35 x 2, £5 x 2). I'm not so sure of part 6 - pan head screw - and significance within the door. Again, don't have car at home so can't have a look. Cheers.

ok that is the part that slides behind the adjustment bracket in your car's door jamb. It fixes with 2x bolts and can be adjusted for in and out of your doors to fit the gaps to wings and cills etc.
It appears to have a bush fitted which looks like plastic ? the plastic bushes may be all you need to buy together with the two hinge pivot pins .

Presumably the two metal hinges that are fixed to your door will also have bushes fitted. ? If so you'll need to replace these also.

If the bushes arn't available you could re-bush the pivots yourself quite cheaply

If either of the bars that are fitted to the door is loose this will need to be fixed first because it may be the reason for the door dropping. I would suspect that these door hinge bars ( don't know what they are called ) are screwed onto the inside of the door with large bolts one or both of which may have come loose. You must dismantle your door sufficiently to check as you'll be wasting your time replacing anything else.

Any updates on this?

My bottom hinge has completely come away inside the door and the new paint job is getting ruined every time I open the door. It's so bad that the car is under the weather cover now until the problem has been resolved - or a solution has been discovered that will allow me to move forward with fixing it.

I'm sure there are no fixings inside the door - internal welding seems to be the way that they made the door originally.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
