I assume you dropped it out the bottom? How long did it take?

Purely for interest's sake, did you open the old engine to see how badly damaged it was? Was it just the top end or had it damaged pistons and/or big ends?

Apparently it can come out the top but a lot of bits have to come off to get it through the 'ole.

they can come out the top, but its harder and less clearance, much easier to drop it down.

10 hours is not too bad for a first attempt and at home

Good work on the engine swap!

I've had the dubious pleasure of doing this myself recently. I took it out the bottom as well, but if I had to do it again, I'd try and take it out the top. I believe you have to take off the crankshaft pulley as it fouls the bonnet catch but otherwise it would save alot of aggro removing all the steering gear.

Mine has been out the bottom every time (there's been a few...) and that is working with a dealer trained technician. Admittedly it's with the benefit of a 2 post lift, but he wouldn't entertain coming out the top.

I suppose it would depend on what I was doing, if I was doing a clutch or front end re-seal then you could drop the whole lot attached to the subframe. If I was changing the engine, then I would definately have a go at taking it out the top. Getting all the steering/suspension lined up again is a pita.

The crank pulley is not really the problem, its the clutch housing that gets in the way
