As some of you may know - i have a 1986 944 turbo.

When i bought the car it came with a box full of go faster parts. These had been removed from the car as there was an issue with the car "using" water. It was thought that this was a head gasket problem.

In my last thread titled 'is this the end', the car was found to have a broken radiator and this has now been changed. Pending a compression check, i now plan to add the go faster parts back to the car.

Some pictures of the parts:

and in particular:

The car already has a Tial dual port wastegate, Bailey Dump valve and Manual boost controller fitted.

Some graphs that came with the car (sorry they are on their side)

Are there any turbo experts up there that can tell me what this means? I have been told that the torque is the important measure as top end performance is useless unless you live in the "Fatherland". Will the car be noticeably different and will this be detrimental to the life of the engine?

What people actually mean when they talk about a car having good torque, generally, is the it has a wide torque curve. You need to consider the torque produced across the full engine RPM range, theres no point for example in making a large torque but only in a small RPM band as it makes it hard to take advantage of it. If you have good torque across the RPM range its much more accessable.

The thing with modifying a turbo is that you just increase the boost pressure and you purely gain torque whenever the turbo is boosting, whereas in tuning N/A engines you *often* just move torque higher up the RPM band to give you more power.

You will notice significantly increased performance if you install the mods whenever the turbocharger is on boost. The engine may also benefit from improved ignition mapping when off boost as well.

Rav

By the pics its just the chips and fpr you have to fit.

Probably want to get fuel air mixture checked after - 3rd graph.

Do you have a good boost gauge fitted?

Unfortunately Rich, that afr is pretty normal for a tuned 944 - even standard they run very rich at WOT. The only useful parts there are the chips & fuel regulator (as Rich has said) as you already have a boost controller & wastegate. I'd check what spec the chips are - are they supposed to be used with a higher pressure fuel and more boost? They will probabaly allow you to use more boost but you'd need to check what the boost limit is (usually 1.0 to 1.2bar). Power is a calculation of torque x rpm.

You will also need to run on 97 Octane minimum if using the extra oomph, Authority chips are a bit prehistoric i have been informed ? but have no experiance myself ?

I don't have a boost pressure indicator other than the one that Porsche fitted in the dash.

I need to find a local specialist who is educated in this type of modification, as i feel its over my head.

Take it to Wayne Scholfield if your serious. Forget the chip set. He will make a difference to it. You may want to look at the instant HP kits on Lindsey Racing first. Not big money for real gains.

He's not local to you. Bit of a legend in Porsche racing. He owned & raced 944's for years. He's now racing a Suzuki cappuccino with a bike engine in it! Based in Milnrow. No' 01706-651000 You ring & leave a message & eventually he calls you back. Nobody knows more about live mapping. When he'd finished with mine I had to uprate to a turbo clutch & fit new drive shafts. Gained over 100lbs of torque in the mid range. Cost £300 but I got all day for that & an injector clean. Best £300 I ever spent on the car. The results will be better if you invest in some kit from Lindsey racing first. Trouble is once you start you can't stop! :)

Ok - I have left Neil Garner and company in charge with putting these back onto the car. They seem to know what they are talking about - but certainly do charge the money !!

I am due to collect on Friday 8th April.

Fingers crossed.

You are going to have lots of fun when you get that back - it really brings them to life that extra bit of go.

I have been hunting an accurate Boost pressure gauge, Air/Fuel mixture gauge as suggested by earlier threads.

Looking at the Lindsey racing website, i have seen this sort of thing:
Image

Is anyone here running anything like this who can advise me?

Im unsure about wideband and narrow band and also how complicated it is to install this sort of thing.

its a good idea getting a boost guage if you want to get the car set up properly, but would suggest go for something that suits the rest of the cars guages like VDO

eg
