I broke down on track yesterday in the wet. I drove 85miles to the circuit in the wet and the car cutout a few times on the journey but I managed to stay out of the spray and get to the circuit. A few laps round brands indy and the car broke down again and I was unable to get it going reliably. Waited till lunch time and decided to try and get it home. Car drove perfectly in the dry all the way home. The car has only broke down in the wet since it was put on a rolling road and tuned up.

I need to get it sorted before the end of Feb as have another track day at Sliverstone which I am sharing with friend.

Deep joy

Any pointers would be appreciated

Does your car have it's engine tray on? If not perhaps water getting sprayed onto something. Just a thought.

Mine wouldn't start when it was damp and the problem turned out to be the dizzy cap. new one plus rotor arm was less than £30 from ECP.

Engine tray is a good one so I will check as I don't think so. Dizzy cap and rotor replaced not too long ago but I will check it out.

More suggestions would be good.

Thanks

Old spark plug leads or water getting past the seals in the head?!? Even just a bit of water shorting out a sensor.

Also check all the seals and ducts at the front of the car, if one is missing or fitted wrong then it could be directing water just where you don't want it.

Check the plug on the sender on the hall sender on the side of the distributor. If this is the same as the 968, they can go brittle and break up.

I had a problem like this on my 2.7. It would cut out at roundabouts and traffic lights and could sometimes take upto half an hour to restart, needless to say I was not very popular with other road users when this happened. So after ruling out every possible thing we could think of including ECU being sent away for testing, we were stumped, thats local garages, Porsche specialists and Auto electricians. I thought my wee car was never going to get fixed.

After a year of this and about 1.7k later an auto electrician diagnosed the problem.

There are two sensors on the drive shaft that were damaged. So when they decided not to work the engine cut out. They cost about £90-100 each, the car has run fine ever since.
Take a look at them before you spend any more cash, so you dont end up spending a small fortune like me.

Thanks very much for the info on the drive shalf sensors. I will indeed look at these as its very possible they could have been damaged with the work that has taken place when replacing the Turbo that failed on me.

I am out of the country until 21st of Feb but will get straight on it when I return.

:)

Also there is a foam gasket beneath the distributor cap.

Hi Jamie, what do you mean about the foam gasket beneath the distributor cap? Is this likely to cause problems when wet?

cheers

The distributor cap sits on a foam gasket, these are often not changed and become brittle and will let water and dust inside the cap.I will add a link so you can see what it looks like! Check the reference sensors!! On the reat of the block, they get their signal from the ring gear and from pins in the flywheel! Mine were not making a good connection where they plug together (often Cracked here) causing a no start problem.Good Luck!!!

Thought I would give an update on progress. Not sure its fixed the problem yet but found that the dizzy cap bottom screw was loose, ie the bottom of the dizzy was open which would allow water to get in. The trick is how to get the screw in as there is no room and you need to put some pressure on it due to the spring tension. Anyone have a trick for doing this?

Still need to check out the drive shalf sensors but ECU and relays fairly dry so no problems there.

Yes I thought a short fat stubby would be the answer as started doing that and it rained, so will start again tomorrow when I have some light and strength in my hands
