Help needed 944s. Hand Brake.
My 944 has recently failed its MOT on a number of small very frustrating things! but also failed on the handbrake recording "little or no effect." I have recently had new disc and pads all round including hand brake pads. The MOT also reported a frayed hand brake cable. Does anyone know if this may be the only cause? and if so is it a DIY job (any tips?!) as my local garage say it will take 3 hours, which is time i cant afford!

any comments would be much apreciated!

David, personally they are welcome to it at three hours!
OK the handbrake is nowt to do with the rear pads, it is a mini drum brake on each hub using the disc bell as the drum.
Changing the handbrake cables would be first, popping off the rear discs to get that end of the cable in. Then assuming everything is clean & working at the wheel end, replace the disc & adjust using the knurled wheel each rear wheel once these are OK, then adjust the cable.
I'm on a 3G line so can't pick do a google too easily but google "944 handbrake clarke" or "944 handbrake pelican" should give you instructions. Fiddly & time consuming rather than mega technical that's why I gave it to someone else!

Jim,
Thanks very much. It sounds like more of challenge than the handbrake in the spitfire then!
maybe it is best to just hand it to the garage then..

I second that Jim, i did my handbrake cables,(long & short) and shoes, it can be a big job !!! mine was on the original cable and shoes ..i had to drill out the cable ferrule in the body ,seized solid to the body (1hr of very hard work) ...shoes were relatively easy the adjuster's needed strip clean and coppa slipn. As Jim said if they have quoted 3hrs all in,book it in. Got all the parts from EURO CAR PARTS, all OEM at about 1/2 OEM cost.

Good luck

cheers
