I don't want to sound like an armchair expert, but I think I'm going to. The service history is critical, as someone on here said last year " A service book of stamped oil changes does not a service history make".

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Lee. You also need to see a file full of invoices to back up repairs and services done. My 944 had no invoices what so ever but a fully stamped up book. I had major problems with my 944. In hindsight, I would have walked away from that car. I would never touch any Porsche without invoices to back up the work. I'd also even phone a few of the phone numbers on the invoices just to make sure that the invoices tallied up with the ones in the folder. It has been known that people photocopy invoices and change registrations on invoices to show work done when it actually hasn't been done at all! But thats a worse case scenario.

An inspection is a must. Check the sills are not rotten as well. I noted that the 944 S2 badge is not in it's correct position on the back of the car. It could be something as simple as it hasn't been put back in the right position if the back end has been blown over for instance. It could also have had a rear end shunt. So, check box sections behind the boot carpet carefully. Also, is the sticker with options codes and chassis numbers still present on the rear end bulkhead behind boot carpet? If it's missing or painted over, car may have been rear ended.

All sound advice thats been given so far though. The dealer looks reputable. He seems to selling a good selection of cars. I didn't know you could a Merc so cheap!

Agree with just about all the advice given , for me though it's too dear and it's not the most popular colour to sell on in the future. Even if it is straight and rot free I cant see it over 4,500 at the moment.

One day you will want to sell it even if it's just because you have fallen for Porsche and want a 968 or whatever.
A nice metallic Blue or lovely deep Red etc will fly out of the door but White although loved by some it's hated by many.

Best of luck

Mas

Just looked at the car in both ads, 1k miles difference ? I may be able to pop in on my travels as I pass quite close to this garage on occasions, will let you know if I am able to. Won't be a PPI but I had a 944S for 6 years so know where to look for rust etc

Hi Mas,

When I parted company with my 944, I was told it was the wrong shade of red! (Mine was Garnet Red). This guy was telling me 'Lipstick Red' is the only colour for a Porsche. I told him it's offically called 'Guards Red' and I won't repeat here what I told him to do with his offer he made for my car!!!

I think that its a good thing that the BMW sale is slowing you down. You'll learn a lot by looking at a few first. The trouble with 944's is they tend to end up at the dodgy end of the dealers and it tends to be the dodgy end of the 944 market that end up there!

The age means most dealers wont take them and the value means most good ones are sold privately. I would do the hard thing and hold out until the 330 sells.

OR you could approach a known Porsche trader, explain your possition and see if he'd be prepaired to find one for you. Might not be the best value for money option but could be a good way of getting the hard work done for you?

P.s. nearly all S2/turbo models have aircon but almost none of them work as the aluminum becomes porous over time and the condenser units have to be replaced. Too expensive for most owners to justify.

p.p.s. drive a well maintained S2 and turbo first. I'm sure someone local will oblige if you don't want to falsly pester people with cars for sale. The S2 is a lovely car but I think the turbo feels more special to drive. For me that unique 2.5ltr four pot turbo delivery is more of an event that makes me look forward to going for a drive.
