Hi Claire

Check tightness of belt by twisting belt on longest run. You should just be able to twist it 90 degrees using finger pressure.

Did you change the tensioner? If you did, the belt might be quieter now and it was previously masking the noise of the tappets. Tappets are fairly easy to do (but a bit fiddly), you need a smallish (3mm I think) allen key. I use a small socket type one on a ratchet to do mine. Not much room to get in there to do them, but it is possible. The Haynes manual gives a good description of this.

All the best

David

The belt tensioner was changed and the belt will turn 90 deg. I'm sure there was no tappet noise before, and the belt was a lot looser too. Could the belt be too tight of the lower oil pump pulley be out of alignment ?

Hi Claire

Try running the engine with the cam belt cover removed (keep your fingers and everything else well clear). If the tensioner/sprockets are faulty, your should be able to hear what is going on.

If it isn't the belt/ cam belt gear that is making the noise, and you are sure it's the tappets, then look at the valve clearances.

One problem that does occur sometimes is a lack of oil flow to the camshaft. Are all the cam lobes "oily"? There is an oil fed pipe that sits above the camshaft(which has holes in it to spray oil on the cam shaft) which can either block, or the plastic elbow where it comes out of the head can break/come loose and you can then loose the oil flow. If the camshaft runs dry, it will wear very quickly.

I can only speak from my own experiences. I have changes 2 cambelts on the N/A 2.0 litre 924 and I haven't come across any problems. Did you keep the cam timing correct when you did yours? Tappets, they generally start to get noisy after 15,000 miles/2years. I do change the oil 6/9 months at a time. Dirty oil will lead to engine wear, so keep the oil clean.

I hope you get this sorted soon.

All the best

David
