Just picked up my new (well, old) 944, having a look around I spotted a hole which I think should have a bung or something.

Anyone shed some light on it?

It's an inspection hole. You can check the cam timing using it. May have had a rubber bung in when new but most have been lost. Not really a problem You can probably find a grommet that will fit it if it bothers you.

J.J. is right. It's for the setting TDC ( Top Dead Centre ) on the cam before starting any work involving the cam or timing. You need a good light to see anything, only a couple of marks lining up with a groove to indicate TDC .

I just popped in a rubber grommet to keep any dirt out.

The grommet is available for buttons from your main dealer. one fixed one moving (pulley) timing marks to look at.
