Hi Guys.
I had another bash at the car yesterday - I stripped out the carpets and the centre console so i can get a look at the foot wells for any damage.
Guess what, no surprise, rust has managed to creep in!

Images attached, looks like i will need to weld in some serious amounts of steel.

Also, are the carpets supposed to be glued into place? I had to struggle getting the carpets loose from the glue!
Maybe on of the previous owners glued them in or its like that from factory?

That's an awful lot of rust, did the guy keep it in his swimming pool? The only thing I can say is, if you are going to do it then it should be good for another 20 years once it is done.

Carpets were also glued on my 83 car.

Those pictures make me feel better about the restoration job I'm doing on my 83 car as I've had the carpets out and there's no rust in there just a tiny bit at the back of the sills which a bit of dynax S50 should hopefully hold off (it really is a tiny amount) but they fill me with dread for what I might find on my 944S which I already know is quite rusty.

Why is on floor red? One black? I would get the door cards off and check inside the door. Also around the rear hach locks and rear number plate lights. Inside and out.

Now is a good time 2 get some new carpet in as well. You could replace with some think thiner, cheaper and lighter.

Mayb with some more steel, you could put a 3rd plate in which would help it ever get that far in again?

I will strip the car when i have some free time, at the moment, my job and other half take up all of my spare time lol.
I will be inspecting all of the steel inside. Door cards, boot, and i will need to look at the fuel tank as well as it was giving some oudor when it was full, also let a few drops out when it was parked up - no odor or drops now its down to a qtr after syphoning some out!

After the floor and sill rusty metal has been cut out, i will be installing some pipework into the structure making it a Piece of cake to weld a cage into.

Think i will rust treat before any paint goes on!

I've used Dynax S50 to treat the rear of my sills as I could see a bit of rust through the vents behind the door, but having seen those pictures I'm a little concerned that I'm only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Do you have any tips on getting the dynax all the way along the sills?

Hi. You might be able to get the dynax into the hard to reach areas if you can get the hose through the sill drainage holes. These are at the bottom of the sill allong the bottom edge nearest to the exterior of the car rather than towards the inner sills.

If you want to go that step further, you could remove the carpet from the inner sill section and you will then have access to the rubber grommets on the inner sill (might be able to see them in my pictures of the interior) Im asuming these were drainage for the sills whilst in manufacturing when they dip the whole car to galvanise the body.
If you remove these grommets, you should have a better view of the outer sills with a torch.
You should be able to get to the outer sills with the dynax better this way.
