My 944S is currently having to live outside in the wind and the rain (with it's combination of already rusty bits doesn't fill me with joy) but when I went to get something out of it this weekend I was met by a load of water dumped out of the open door.

For some reason the door seat is letting water in and it settles on top of the sill until the door is opened and it releases it all over the floor. Both doors do this, I don't know whether it's because the rain was particularly heavy or this is just something that happens with all 944s.

I'm assuming new door sills would sort the issue if it's not a common thing but when I already need to replace the door seals on 1 car at ~£90 each I think I'd rather find a cheaper option if available.

Any ideas?

A Porsche machanic friend told me that VW Golf door seals are half the price and while not the same, they do the job. This is contrary to all I have been told on this forum, so I don't know how true it is. Perhaps you could get a snip off a golf from a breakers and check the profile?

Mine lives outside in all weathers & this is not normal. JMG may get the seals made for you as they are replacing the stock they used to get from Forest Fine. Worth a ring anyway. They had a sunroof seal made for me cheaper than any other I could find. Part of the seal could be replaced by a VW golf seal but not the top half which is probably your problem. In fact if you remove the bottem seal it would let the water out! Will also be noisey at speed.

I have no worries about noise at speed considering the engine has a hole in the side of it.

Since it's the top half of the seal causing the problem I think I'll try the old trick of putting something around the seal and shutting the door to see where it's not catching then see if I can do something about it. I really don't want to spend any money on this one at the moment because I desperately want my lux on the road.

I'm sure I've seen a similar post on this subject somewhere where someone fixed this by cutting small nicks in the bottom of the door seal to let the water drain out. This doesn't exactly fix the cause, but solves the problem.

In heavy rain, it has been known for the build up of water will flow over the top of the sill and into the car and soak the carpets which isn't funny.

On the plus side, I guess your shoes get a wash when you open the doors.

MIne does this, I assume the window seals aren't in the best of health. Be warned it does the door trims & speakers no good at all.

Good point, I didn't think of the water coming in through the window. Where are the drainage holes in the bottom of the door, surely not on the inside of the seal?

Sounds normal. Mine always use to do this if it had been parked out in the rain.

You could also try this old trick to see if you've got any water ingress thorugh or around the door seal. Put chalk or talc on the entire door seal. Shut the door and spray the car with water. After the water has drained off for a few moments, open the door. If the talc has washed off certain parts of the seal, this is where water ingress might be occurring.

Plus it'll be quite cheap to try out.
