Hi all
Changed my alloy sthis week to 17's and in doing so noticed that the wheel on the passenger rear is closer to the front of the arch than the other.

Any ideas what might cause this, whould it be the torsion bar or could it be something to do with the shock itself?

Its very unlikely to be this but Check that both the wheels have the same offset

This isn't that unusual Chris and amazingly it may be just down to manufacturing tolerances.

My black one is like this, so I took the 17s off it and put on some 16" Cup IIs to eliminate the risk of the tyre hitting the arch lip on uneven roads (are there any smooth roads left?), but my red one is fine, so I stuck 18" Cup IIIs on it.

It is on mine but only when I'm not in the car! When in the drivers seat it's level. Don't know if thats by accident or design. Nothing to do with the shock it's the way it's set up.

Have 944s not got adjustable rear suspension? Could having this unevenly set not cause one of the wheels to appear closer to the arch than the other?

That's crazy, it probably came from porsche like that?? Quality control wasn't such an issue in the 80's then lol

Theres about a cm difference. 3cm between the front of the arch and the wheel on the drivers side and 2cm on the passenger side.... Doesn't bother me too much if it not something wrong, still drives spot on, just thought I had better check!

Manufacturing tolerances. Something that Barry Hart mentioned to me once.

Many cars of the 70s and 80s had this scenario, especially those with live axles.

Crazy or not, that's the answer given in numerous threads on different forums. If there's no play in anything and the car goes in a straight line, I wouldn't waste any money on rectifying it.

bit off subject, but which coulor car do you like most? black or red? im currently red and thinking off going black, how would you discribe the shade of black you got. many thanks

Black looks great when it is clean, but try keeping it that way!

Red suits the car's lines very well but as it has no clear coat tends to fade to the infamous 'Guards Pink'

On balance, I prefer black. Mine is the standard solid Panther Black. Looking forward to seeing the pics of your's if it gets resprayed.

Mines sprayed in clear coat! It's Gambia red not Guards red. Bit off topic but you guys aren't listening. When you set up a race car you do it with the driver in! (Or a sack of sand the right weight.)

They were hand built and they lacked the close tolerances that automated assembly machines achieve.

I believe that Porsches only became 'regular' with the introduction of the water cooled cars. Torsion and coil 911s and 924/944/968s all have their idiosyncrasies. Its always the near side btw, so its 'deliberate' as opposed to random sloppiness.
