AFAIK, the early Series 1 944s (like yours) have the same gearbox as the 924S. My friend fitted a 924S gearbox into his 944.

I am fairly sure that it will not fit, IIRC the 924S has the plastic fuel tank which was fitted to give clearance to the later larger box.

1986 924S did not come as standard with a plastic fuel tank it had a steel one, I know I had to fix a hole in the one I had. I think the gearbox from the 924S will only fit the early 944s and not the 924 2.0l I am not sure but I think the 924 has the differential on the other end of the box to the 924S.

Must be an optional or later change then as I owned an S for four years and it defo had a steel tank as it had rotted through.

The S2 plastic tank will or can be made to fit a 924 however as can the engine from an S2 now that would be interesting.

i think were off the issue , my 924 and the 924s both had steel tanks.

i just wanted to know if it is the same five speed gearbox fitted to both , so that they are interchangable.

cheers

AFAIK, I'm fairly sure Series 1 944s also came with steel tanks too.

Hi Roy, unfortunately the 924S gearbox wont fit the '81 924 as the S 'box is the same as the 944 (25mm torque tube same as 924 turbo though) And for those wanting to know about the plastic fuel tank, it would have been a DIY fitment later on in the cars life as the 924 only had steel tanks throughout production, so it's either a late 944 or 968 replacement.
