My gearstick vibrates at 3000 RPM'ish. Ive found that this means that the rubber on the clutch is on the way out and the clutch needs replacing. Not bad for a 187000 miles on the first clutch. This could be your problem.

Is the vibration speed or rev related? Could just be a loose gearstick or something worn. Then again it could be something different. I'd advise you to do some more checks first.

Indicated 80mph is about 3200 (I'm guessing as I've never been that fast because it's naughty).

Park the car, in neutral, push the clutch in and rev to 3200 - does the gear stick vibrate?
Slowly drop the revs below 3000 - do the vibrations disappear?
Increase the revs above 3400 - do the vibrations disappear?
Slowly go from 2800 to 3400 rpm - do you go through the vibrations?

Do it all again with the clutch out.

Do all the above replacing 3200 with 1600 revs.

See how you get on.

The gear lever linkage is prone to wear as is the plastic cup which holds the ball on the bottom of the lever, there is also rubber vibration reducers in the gear knob which fit on top of the lever and these can get worn.

I woould remove the gaiter and take a look at the component parts and replace as necessary, I changed my lever, the plastic cup and the rubber anti vibration pieces which reduced the vibration significantly, this is a much cheaper fix than the clutch which could be the problem but worth starting on the cheaper option first.

You could also check the linkages underneath the car from lever to transmission as these do wear and can cause vibration, but again these can be expensive so worth starting with the gear lever, I think I got my new lever for about £27 from the USA and the plastic bearing was a freebie from someone but they are not expensive and usually come with the lever.

I'm on 196800 and still the original clutch. With my mechanic friend we did extensive research, checked alignment of the balance shafts first, then put the car up on the ramps, me inside revving and him underneath with his hand inside the part where the torque tube joins the gearbox etc etc, and proved that it is the clutch causing the vibration. If it hasn't failed before hand, when it hits 200000 I'll change it anyway.

You will notice that the prices of the clutch have increased over the last two years or so from about £350 to £600 plus. No justification for it.

Doing the checks I mentioned will confirm what it is without having to get dirty!

Lo

The rubber went on my clutch but and did'nt give me any vibration through the gear knob just a big vibration through my wallet  if it is the clutch you’re looking around the £1,100 mark for a garage to do it.

Still waiting to get mine done, looking at March or April now the sun is coming out :D just a lot of money and you don’t even see the bloody thing

Well you can just go out and do those checks anyway as a penance

If my knob was vibrating in the car I'd get the wife to hold it so that I could concentrate on the driving

Hello,

iv had a simmler thing, but only between 1900-2100 rpm. it's only really noticeable in 5 th gear. (40-45)Because that's the slowist pick up between that rev range. There's a noise aswell which all stops once the gear nob is grasped more firmly. If I put the clucth in the noise and vibrateon stops.

Cause for conceren? Or not.

How to get the gear leaver off

start around the base eage of the leather gatier, this is held on by outward force from a plastic surround. I'm not sure if mine split or it just ment 2 b like it. but theres a bit were it meets in the middle towards the front. So I just pull the leather eage inwards towards the leaver, this usely make it come free.

Next turn the gaiter inside out around the leaver. At it's base u should see a metal clip which holds the leaver in place. Once relised again by force. A small flat tip sceaw driver or something simmler.

The nob should now pull up and off. There a rubber boot around the base roll it back away from the eages and off over the base of the shifter.

Thats as far as iv got, changed my gear gatier from one from eBay, (quite a good) just don't use super gule, as it drys and bites far 2 quiclky, the gatier need pershaping/ straching but I was left with a small hard lump under one side were the gule had stuck in the wrong place.
