I was speaking to a guy at the Autosport show who had tried it. He said he didn't get far and then thought sod it and broke the window. He did say it took him a long time to clean out all the bits of glass from the frame so wasn't sure which was the best was to go if he was doing it again. He did warn about using screw drivers to prise the window out saying it would bend the frame.

It's all hear say though never tried it myself.

There is a guide in Clarkes garage on this website under rear Hatch which details removing the glass and re-fitting to stop squeaks http://www.clarks-garage.com/pdf-manual/body-17.pdf but I think if it was me I would be looking for a second hatch to work on and keep the original as I would suspect the chance of breaking the glass is very high.

I think it will just be a case of removing the spoiler and surrounds, plus wiper and then trying to cut away the glass from the frame and then clean out the old adhesive. I would think it will be difficult to stop the frame twisting once the glass is out so I would check the replacment window is the same shape and size before removing the one you know fits.

I've refurbished my own rear hatch. How difficult it is depends on how it's been bodged/repaired in the past. I got one from ebay (£15) were the glass was falling out. I used a hammer & chisel & was pretty rough with it & it didn't break. Once the trims are snapped off a screwdriver forced the main frame off well enough. Took a long time to clean up the frame before resealing it all again. Better done when it's warmer. Or in a warm garage.

I want to do this as well. Doing it on a spare is a good idea! Any suggestions on where to get a lexan rear hatch from?

Be worth asking EMC as they prep a lot of the 924/44 racers.

I also noticed on the deutschnine website that they supply the rear quarter windows as well for the 968 but make no mention of how they fit or if they supply a window rubber.Anyone got any idea's about fitting them as i have the lexan side window kit sat waiting to be fitted.

It's really hard, I suggest you cut your losses and sell them to me for cheap ;).

Really, its very easy. They pretty much push out from the inside, getting the windows back in is harder. I use a wire to pull the seal over the window. Doesn't take too long.

Hi,

In my honest opinion, I can't see how the cost justifies a 15kg saving in weight.

If only it was that easy,i can get a 944 window out and back in minutes but on the 968 the window is a different shape, bonded in and the glass in encapsulated in the rubber and cannot be removed and as far as i can tell is not avalible tgo buy separatly !!

For a 968 Id suggest using a 924/944 rubber. As stated above, its not a viable proposition otherwise. Id suggest removing the glass with the hatch fitted; although fitting a PC rear window will be a royal pain in the arse. Id buy one used, as theyll all end up looking that scruffy in pretty short order (easy for me to say though, as I have two built-up :D )

You cant use the 944/924 rubber as the 968 has a different shape window hole in the body and would sit in about 2" too far.

968 window shape follows a strighter line from the driver window, like most modern cars. where as are 944 kicks up towards the back, im guess u would need 2 cut area away from the body. wether there built in pillers for stength in tht area i do not no. but i did read in the sales broucher the the roof and body has been built 2 act as a roll cage in the advent tht one should b needed. after 20 year its stength probley not what it was, i had a silght knock on the front say 5" more stoping distance and a colision would of acoured and it left me with a twisted front bump dent high light cover badge panle and wing, and this was problay a stronger area of the car cas of all the mounting points.
