My heater functions - fully off or fully on so determined by the knob inside
But nothing in between. I can see the heater control valve swinging back from max to min when knob is turned from cold to even slightly hot.

So whats the next level of control in it control mechanism doing - why would it swing to max heat?

I must admit I've not tracked down the famous heater control clips yet - are they involved in some way. Do I have to take a cover off to find them?

http://www.clarks-garage.com/ Go to garage shop manuel & then go to Heater. If you scroll down the page to newer 944s it explains it better than I can do.

I got the same problem with mine though its an early dash type.
Heat is constantly on regardless of control positions.
Had a look on the clarkes website section but it was clear as mud to me!!
I was wondering if i could disconnect the heater full stop on mine as i only use the car on sunny days anyway. Im starting to lose weight from driving even short journeys due to owning a sauna on wheels!!!

On early dash cars it is just a cable from the slider to a plastic arm on the heater valve. The valve is at the back of the engine. The arm tends to snap on the valve, if not then it may be the linkage from the slider.
Either way you should be able to manually close the valve and avoid the sauna issue.

I had a similar problem with my S2 the heater control valve was moving under vacuum rather than cable but although it looked like it was shutting off actually it was leaking past so I could only have two positions either on or off. On the S2 it is controlled with vacuum so I was able to test the valve using a big syringe connected to the top and controlling the valve directly, I bought a replacement valve and it works fine now.
