Hi All,

This may be my fault and I hope it is  the car has been smelling of oil lately with the odd puff of smoke when I blip the throttle hard a few times, no oil is being used I checked the plugs today and found 2 and 3 had oil on them but the ends were the correct colour, now this is where it might be my fault last time I checked and cleaned the plugs I put copper grease on the them to help taken them out next, if I put too much on would this melt down like normal oil?.

Never has on any of mine in 35 years of working on motors. Does it leak any oil, are the fumes getting in past the tailgate seal.

It will drop on the garage floor a oil spot about the size of a 10 pence over a week, it seems to be in the middle towards the front of the engine. The smell does come back in when the roof is up but you can also smell it when you start up and on tick over on the drive. I have cleaned the plugs and been out for a short run 8 miles with no smoke and the smell of oil has dropped, checked the plugs after this run and they are dry, I will take it out for a longer run tomorrow.

Siggys right. If the cambox gasket starts to weep it will gas you long before you notice a leak. If the Power steering pump dies the fluid can blow back onto the exhaust also. Been there. :|

Update:

Just been out for a 25mile run, got back checked the plugs and they are dry :? , put the motor back in the garage and the smell of oil has gone just the normal killer flumes. Now I can have a bit of trust in the engine I will take it for a long run in the week.

Looks like it was me and the copper grease

More likely you spilt oil or grease on the manifold or put greasy hands on a hot bit & it has has to burn off.

Plugs 2 and 3 had oil on them when I first checked yesterday.

Had it done a few short runs? Some older motors do chuck a bit of oil up past worn rings when cold.

Hi Jim,

Yes, it only gets short runs, the car is on 96K. At the local meet last Monday evening it was pointed out that there are rubber rings under the rocker and if they weep I may put oil onto the plugs?

Yes that is quite possible. A little oil on something hot makes a lot of smell & smoke :(
