Im still on my quest to get back into the best car i ever had. I want a 944 turbo.

Ive seen a 1989 G plate 944 turbo advertised. Its up for £3750 and is white with blue pin strip cloth interior. Car has 102k miles on it.

So my questions are:

1. Seller mentions a slight gearbox/trans axle whine. What is this all about and what can it cost to fix?
2. I have asked for pictures inside the vent panels within the door shut. Looking carefully (bottom left of picture) i can see rust and also the white of the plastic bodykit? How bad does this look and what will it cost to fix?

Some further pictures are here including rust spots on doors http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o310/rsb377/G269%20EBL/

Please let me know your opinions.

Hello Rav
It seems quite common for the transaxle to whine a bit and they do it for a fair few miles. My unit had done 156000 miles and the pinion bearings and diff bearings are totaly shot. A full set of bearings with seals gaskets etc comes to about £350 inc from Porsche, If you have a reasonable workshop, a press, bearing pullers and some basic measuring equipment then they are quite easy to work with. Porscheshop do a replacement bearing service for about £800 plus fitting if required.
Hope that helps
Cheers

As Andy says all transaxles whine, to the point that with the seats folded & the carpet out you' think it was about to explode any minute!
An oil change can help but most put up with it, I suspect some of the chatter is inherent & even new bearings & set up won't totally fix it.

As for rust it doesn't look too bad, but you'll need to get on top of it ASAP, but at that level it shouldn't be too bad. At the end of the day it is a 20 year old car. And it will never be perfect.

Agree with the above. From that photo it looks pretty clean for a 20 year old car. If the only thing you found is it needs a diff rebuild one day. (Could last for years like that!) Then it's a good bet. Make sure you have a contingency fund!

again agree with above, an oil change in the diff with swepco may quieten things down a bit, the rust is minimal but catch it before it spreads

Mine used to whine , but i put Swepco in it, that brilliant stuff, hardly noticeable now, mind you just changing the oil may have been as beneficial, but i had heard good things about Swepco and it's not that expensive, i got mine from Berlyn Services

Oh yes i had forgot about that, the gear change was a bit sticky before, much better after oil change.
