Hi all.. forgot to mention and ask in last posting (944 in the snow).. I'm interested in what people think the value of the 944 is as I have no idea - would I class it as showroom/cat 1? It's just clocked 114k.... cheers!

Baz, values of everything are on the floor at the moment. I'd suggest 1,500-2,000 but it would need a buyer who wanted an early spec car. When S2 in good nick are fetching 4K it is difficult to value any of the models at the moment.

It looks great in the pics, though pics are very flattering of any car. I'm pretty sure I can see a few stone chips and maybe even a black scuff on the bumper however, which would not bother me in the slightest were it mine, but which I think prevents it from being considered showroom or concourse. You'd also have to get rid of the thing on the back and put the numberplate back where it is supposed to be and probably remove the side skirts to get maximum value for it.

I'd have to agree with Jim in any case, and as the 944 is not a model where the older cars were considered better in any area, (by which I mean they look identical to the untrained eye, they were no more powerful than later cars, they had pressed steel suspension arms, the interior was generally considered to be less good than the 85.5 on cars etc.) then they will always command a slightly lower value than an equivalent condition newer one.

I think you should just be content you have a very nice early 944 and not worry about its value unless something is forcing you to sell it.

I'm proud of the fact that it's one of the very first 944's, and that this model was the first Porsche to have a proper Porsche built engine, developed from other engines.. (I think)

The 944 2.5 block was engineered from the 928 V8 engine. It is in effect one half of the V8, although most, if not all of the internals are specific to the 944 engine.

I have to agree with fen about the add ons. As stunning as the car looks, and it certainly does look stunning, i look at the sill skirts and instantly think, 'i wonder how much rust they are hiding'! And the rear pod thing is hideous, sorry  Remove them and make it more standard looking and the desirability factor goes up to another level in my view.

I agree about the side skirts reflector thing. But having owned early and late dash lux I would say the early car was quicker, lighter and better for no power steering, central locking and no power sunroof.
I would definitely pay more for a good early car over an average late car.
Oh and deep dish wheels are much cooler.

Don't think you can compare them like that Jameso. How nimble it feels is ofter down to the wheels & tyres fitted. Power depends on how fit they are. I've seen as little as 90 at the wheels on some both early & late cars. Depends on condition. Only valuation that count is how much would you have to pay to replace it? Then put that in your agreed value insurance. Mileage doesn't matter if the cars had enough spent on it & only you know that Baz. May be hard to find a fit one in that colour! Leather adds a bit too.

Fair point but the early car is definitely lighter, so will be faster assuming the same engine power.

Early 944 150bhp was the same engine as used in the 924S which as had been stated was originally half the 928 engine, I can't speak for early 944's being quicker than the later similar engined models but i can say the 924s is definately (in my opinion) a nicer drive than earlier and later 2.5l 944s. As I said my opinion only but certainly feels quicker, steers better and as it has most of the 944 running gear stops just as well if not better due to slightly less weight.

I do agree as well that unfortunately in todays economic climate car value is dependant on what someone is willing to pay at the time. I also would agree that I prefer the look of the 944 without extra none std body panels but this is personal choice one mans side skirt is another mans rust cover.
