The main thing that would stop me from wanting to do any big V8 conversion, is the tendency for the unit to stick out the top.

All but one of the 924 conversions I have seen required a IMO ugly bonnet bulge/cutout.

If doing anything like this, I would want a real sleeper. 25yo car on the outside, tyre shreading power under the bonnet.

That is something else I like about the LS V8 convertions I've seen in the states, completely standard body work. From what I can tell you do need to lower the cross member slightly but this is more to centre the engine on the torque tube than clear the bonnet.

Hi :)

Although I love V8s , I would have thought it a lot of work for very little power increase to go from a 944 engine to a Rover V8....

All the best Brett :)

standard rover V8 only kicks out 155 brake, so a backward step

an old SD1 3.5 makes ~bhp150, grab a decent 3.9/4.0 and you're looking at 220bhp+ without doing much at all (decent intake/ignition. (4.0 litre tvr chimaera spec) Chuck in a decent cam and north of 250bhp is easily doable, and with decent torque and throttle response everywhere.

personally, I want to build a shortstroke 3.5 litre rover V8 based round a 63mm JE engineering crank, forged pistons and a cross-bolted 3.9 block, bung decent heads/cam and megasquirt at it and it'll be good for well over 300bhp and rev to 7500rpm.

that'd be nice in a 944 :)

main problem with the american engines isnt weight (can be countered with ££) or cost or power limits.. its the low rpm torque destroying the drivetrain. A problem a tuned rover engine wouldnt really encounter.

I saw a V8 in an old 19080's 911. At the time I thought how ridiculous, but as weve now heard Porsche are developing a V8 911 now anyway!

spec ?

Not sure the man who bought the TR7 with it in, who lives in the IOM would be too keen on you "borrowing" it

Engine spec is 3.5 1990 Defender (so late spec heads etc) with standard bores & crank. Lightened & balanced flywheel, ARP main studs, heads skimmed 1mm (40 thou) to give 9ish:1 CR & proper 3 angle seats, RC87 266 deg cam which is used in manual range rovers so equivalent to a mild road cam. Offy 360 inlet manifold & Webber 500 (or Carter or Edelbrock same thing) carb. Decent exhaust manifolds & very little silencing (ask the neighbours  ) Cost to build was around £600 & around 140-150 hours of my time.

More pics etc. here:-http://www.pbase.com/tr7v8/rover_v8

nice work :)

i've got dibs on a mates 4 litre chimaera engine + offy manifold for not a lot as and when his 4.6 goes in...

not the best Rv8 in the world but it'll suffice as a starting point :)

manifolds are the stumbling block at the moment, some of the fabrication quotes are almost enough to make me buy a tig and a pipe bender and do it myself.

Thanks.

For manifolds, Powerspeed exhausts in Hothfield nr Ashford Kent have a good rep & aren't expensive. Got a couple of others around here that do bespoke stuff.
