Hi

The reset button on the trip odometer on my recently aquired 944S2 doesn't work, the odometer turns normally but won't reset. I have searched the forums but have found no other reference to this problem and was wondering if this is common and if anyone knows a fix.

Thanks

Steve

Quite a common problem, reputedly one of the things that causes it is resetting the trip whilst moving. A gear has stripped within the speedo. Replacements are available from various people in the US for around $25 & it's apparently easy to do yourself or you can get it refurbed by someone such as speedy cables etc.

I thought that if you stripped the gear by resetting the odometer whilst on the move, it stopped the odometer from working at all?

I believe the reset switch in the centre vent is electrical - perhaps a bad contact there?

I heard the same thing about resetting while moving apparently it stops the oddometer working all together. Mine does not reset the trip meter and faced with a clock out job and risk the oddometer stopping working, I just remember what figure is on the trip meter and use that to work out mileage or if it is rolling around 999 then use the main oddometer. May try fixing it when I take the clocks out for an illumination refurb but not before.

I know the of the odometer problem with the 924 and early 944's but thought this had been solved with the oval dash. The reset button is in the middle of a vent and looks mechanical rather than electrical as it appears to have some sort of pushrod. I had hoped there was an easy fix. I have no backlighting in the clock either and the first three settings of the heater fan don't work.

Behind the push rod is a switch which is electrical, I have only seen it once when I took my dash out, it clips into place and looks like it could become dislodged quite easily, not sure if you would need to pull the whole dash to get to that alone.

Resetting whilst in motion is an old wives tale: and it only applies to the series one and 924 / VW type speedometer/odometer. On these instruments the odometer drive wheel is made out of a red fibrous material, which is far from hardy. Over time it wears away, at the very most resetting in motion is the straw that broke the camels back: never the cause.

Had the same problem on previous 2 944s. In each case it was the reset switch, if I remember correctly the first one was a loose connector and the second was the switch had been pushed out of its clips. Hope this helps.

Usually it is the reset switch that gets a bad connection.
Also there is actually a special light bulb (944 641 900 00)for the clock!!

It does only work with the ignition on though. I spent an hour trying to work out why mine wouldn't work after I had changed the dash housing to fix a broken vent. I thought I had broken something and gave up for that day. Checked it the next day as I was driving (I've not had any issues resetting on the move) and lo it worked. Felt a right prat!
So if you trying to do it stopped that's why. Otherwise what they all said ^^
