I knew I should have kept my mouth shut about having my Turbo back and running so well. Looks like it’s not all sorted after all.

The car has started idling very high, around 2,000rpm. Not all the time, and not under reproducible conditions. Sometimes it’s when I first fire her up, sometimes it’s when I stop at traffic lights. Other times it idles at just over 1,000 as per normal.

That’s not the worst of it though. I’ve been enjoying the car just fine for the past few days. This evening I took it out to do some grocery shopping, and it all went a bit wrong. Pulling out onto a dual carriageway at around 40mph, it suddenly dropped right down to 1,000rpm. Gently press the accelerator back down and it struggles to gain anything. Then it all goes back to normal. It cuts out like that again and again, until I eventually have to pull over and put the hazards on. I give it another go, and limp to Tesco. I try to leave again after getting the shopping done, and don’t even make it out of the car park.

I did get the car home just fine, but I was terrified that it was going to lose power again and strand me halfway. It was idling high every time I had to stop.

So … idling too high and cutting out (choking?) at random. The engine isn’t fully cutting out though, just dropping to little or no power. Not even enough to move the car at all in the worst cases.

Any ideas? The saga of what’s been fixed and why over the past few weeks is here—it’s just had a new AFM, starter, air filter and plugs … could there be more damage from the flood than initially diagnosed? Could the new AFM be knackered?

I’ll be talking to the guy who did all the work first thing tomorrow, anyhow …

Check the connector to the AFM. Also the operation of the throttle position switch. (switch and analogue).

Also worth casting your eye over the vaccuum lines, j boot etc.

Idling issues are normally ICV or Idle Control Valve or more likely an air leak on the myriad hoses on these cars. A bad airleak could cause issues with lack of throttle response as the AFM won't "see" the throttle being opened.
Another though is how much fuel have you gone through since it went for a swim? Could be water in the fuel.

I also thought throttle position switch when I read this - I got similar sporadic losses of power when mine started to fail.

It would also give poor idle control as well. Maybe it got a bath when the AFM went & is now dying?

All fair suggestions, thanks. Throttle control switch sounds like a likely culprit, it was adjusted only a month or so before the car went for a swim.

Motortune are too busy to take a look at it until the end of next week, so I’m turboless again. Four hour drive today in the Mini instead, I suppose. Getting the car to them later will be, erm, interesting. Think I’ll avoid the motorway!

Tough luck Tony. I know how it feels. Hope it's soon running sweet again.
