Due to the lack of much about these boxes on the Porsche side and the quotes beiong mental now for any work on them, i decided to strip the box myself. Was quite easy to strip and lots of burnt bits of clutch plate was found. There is a decent video about stripping an 010 box which is pretty much identical to the 087 version fitted to the Porsche. I ended up getting a full overhaul kit from the USA for 1/3 of the price from Europe as could obtain nothing in the UK at all. This has all the O rings, gaskets, seal rings and the 3 sets of steel and friction plates. The box is apart now but 2 of the pistons are looking a bit tired so am ordering a new set oif 3 from the company in the US. Took 2 days to arrive from ordering so just as fast from there as in the UK! I will put some pictures up later.

I'll look forward to seeing the updates Alasdair.

Are you back into Porsches again?, it's been a while since we've caught up.

Autoboxes are pretty easy to rebuild. Cleanliness is essential. Also soak the plates in ATF for 24 hours before installing. Not sure if you need pressure gauges to set it up or torque wrench.

More faces from the past! Be good if Alasdair has his Porsche hat on again. I know Roy is still tinkering and have seen him a few times.

You still got that green wrapped 968? Was lovely when I last saw it......

I can tell you all about 016 boxes but autoboxes are alien to me. Is the 944 one not agricultural at best?

I had my own gearbox drama this week. Went from gears being difficult to find to gears becoming impossible to find. I fitted a very nice recently rebuilt turbo s box into mine last year, which came with a billet short shift on it. A very nice box but wasn't happy with the shift, replaced the front lever and made no difference.

Turns out the previous owner negated to put thread lock on the pointy bolt that holds the linkage to the shift rod, and it was progressively working its way loose for the last 1500 miles before finally removing itself from the shaft completely! Long story short but after a bit of a faff it and a rethreaded linkage and an thicker uprated pointy bolt I now have the slickest short shifting transaxle known to man, an absolute joy to drive!

Stuart

Roy still does a bit of powdercoating for me from time to time so see him a bit. I chucked the train job nearly a year ago, had moved companies and hated it so been doing my own thing. Been working on and off in myt mates garage in Glasgow so use a ramp in their for my stuff. Did a top end on an S2 last year with belts, water pump , engine mounts, valve guides, etc for a boy i knew, doing this 924S for a guy that Stuart at SP in Stirling put on to me. Needs the usual belts, water pump, engine mounts and the gearbox hgad started to play up. Never had an oil change in there in it's life, the oil was disgusting. The adhesive that bonds the material to the plates doesn't like moisture so the plates just fall to pieces, the car had been sat for a long time, the final drive oil was like a grey paste that came out, Porsche never fitted a drain plug which was rather daft. It seems the plates started to lose the ferodo material which then statrted to clog the oil strainer as that sits only 3 or 4 mm off the plate so not much room at all. The strainer was totally blocked which then exacerbates the problem with low oil pressure which then means the pressure on the plates is less thus causing more slip in the clutches. The cost of a rebuild kit was 705 Euros plus the tax but only $178 from the US for the same kit. Took 2 days to arrive from the States, it turns out 2 of the piston seals have slight leaks as well so have a full set of them on their way.
Don't have any Porsches at the minute, still have a B10 V8 BM i bought nearly 12 years ago and 3 E type jags as well plus a mostly restored TR4A that i have known since i was 17 when a mate bought it. The bodywork is all done but needs painting and the chassis is all done, just needs put together after the engine and gearbox have been done. The block is cracked between the halves so is in the Isle of Man just now being welded.
I finished up with the bike racing last year as had won all i wanted to win and could win at the Isle of Man and its very expensive as well. Fuel alone is £3600 a time for 3 bikes for the event! 3 sets of engine rebuild components are over 10 k just for the bits! Not a cheap hobby at all. Won the Senior Classic TT in 2019 with Davo Johnston beating Michael Dunlop and the 2022 Senior Manx GP with Steve Smith

File comment: Taken at about 140mph at Ballacrye jump, no photoshopping at all, just a very lucky shot!

The E type is not a bad example, the engine had been rebuilt a few years back but clearly by some idiot who wasn't very good. It started to overheat intermittently, the numpties hadn't retorqued the head properly so i dropped that out for a look. The block had never been flushed or acid dipped when they did it and was chock full of sludge up to the top of the core plugs so it got a full strip. There were also 2 broken rings as there are 2 round coolant passages between the liners an inch from the top that corrode internally and then swell which then causes distortion in the liner thus causing the rings to break as the bore diameter is too small. You have to collapse the liners to remove them and then dip the block to do it properly. The crank was on 40 thou mains and they were unavailable so had been waiting 5 months for them but they appeared just after New Year so new rods and pistons are in and am waiting on the sump baffle plate coming back from repairs to the mounts as they crack. I also have new front frames to fit as well and have overhauled all the suspension too along with a new rack as they are only made occasionally by the company. The pedal box is also out at the moment to modify so i can get my size 13s a bit more comfortable in there. Looking forward to getting it back on the road as it wasn't out last year.

Very nice! Thanks for bringing us up to speed!

My father was Borg Warner trained & I've done some autoboxes as well. SO a fair amount of experience.
Very, very few autoboxes have drain plugs, which is as you've found a BAD idea. So its pan off. Typically you should drop the pan & change filter & fluid around every 50K. Yes the plates breaking up is an issue, that cr4p will have gone through the pump & servos so will not have done any good to them.
What high miles boxes generally need is known as a "Soft seal" overhaul. But if no oil change then there will be bits needing replacement. When you rebuild the box have a pot & a squirt oil can with clean ATF of the right spec.
Not sure if this box uses an external cooler, but if it does flush it out well.
Also drop the torque converter as that will be full of junk & minging ATF which you cannot easily get out out.
There is a school of thought that says an ATF change after a few 1000'd miles after the box goes back into service is worthwhile. Not all agree, but it is cheap maintenance.

No, sold that a good while ago, I have a red 1970 plus 2 that is mostly done and just needs putting together and a 1966 plus 2 that is just a shell.

E-Type daft then! You could at least buy a collection of cars you can fit in!

the 2 seaters are a bit cramped but the plus 2s are OK. They are a beautiful motor, the best i think. They drive well too. Reasonably quick and you see very few on the road.

I'm sure Enzo Ferrari commented they were the most beautiful cars ever made, hard to argue.
