Hi,

Can anyone tell me what this part is..and what it does. It's on my 1989 944 Turbo but isn't connected.

It's a water temp sensor for the turbo water pump I think. Yours seems broken. The threaded part sticking out the electrical connector should be attached to the brass hole you can see near it. It may screw back in or you may need a new sensor. See mine here:
