Continuing on the fusebox and relays theme, I've got a decidedly dodgy looking relay wired into location G18 which can't be helping things:

I'm not sure what it's powering as according to the layout guide there shouldn't be anything in G17, G18 or G19 (it's a non AC model):

I'm going to try unplugging it and see what stops working (if anything).
The car did have a '90s aftermarket Clifford alarm when I bought it which I've had removed (because it used to go off in the middle of the night for no reason), but maybe the extra relay is for that?

Does anyone with a UK S2 have anything in location G18 or G19?

My fuse box from my MY 1990 944 S2.

Nothing in 17 or 18. The relay in slot 19 (928 637 160 00) is part of the standard alarm system.

Thanks Glenn.

To be fair the electrical tape on the dodgy relay was put on by me last week to see if holding the relay in place helped at all. Prior to that it was able to flop about between the edge of the fuse box and the next row of relays.

At the weekend I'm going to have a play with removing each wire in turn from it and seeing if the engine will start and run. If disconnecting it does prevent the car running, then I'll have to check the relay layout and see if I can bypass it by connecting the right wires together.

If this works and gets rid of the misfire, then I'll probably take it to an auto-electrician and get them to put a new Cat 2 immobiliser in, as I'm supposed to have one for ins. purposes.

Hi Dan -

I found this on YouTube today, I am not sure if completely relevant to your dilemma but it's worth a look:

I had a similar problem of the car cutting out after going over a bump. Turned out to be a dirty plug on the MAF thing. Cleaned it all and have never had a problem since.
