When the car is under labour at relatively low revs, or is revving above about 4000rpm, the gear lever rattles violently. I have replaces the gear lever with a new one from only 944.com and have also fitted a short shifter from the same source, but the rattle still continues. I have checked the gearbox mounts and they all seem fine. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?

It could be your engine mounts. The driver side one is prone to failing and will create vibration through the car.
