AFM = Air Flow Meter

Basically as I understand it it's simply a door that opens progressively with increased airflow that turns a potentiometer producing a variable voltage signal allowing the DME to increase fuel flow etc as necessary.

If that's all it needs it's no big problem. (£200 ish refurbished, or £50 to 100 off ebay second hand.) If this is anywhere near Bournemouth I would ask the owner if he has any objection to having it checked over by Jon Mitchell. You need to know the state of the cam sprockets & you can't see them. There cast into the camshafts & replacing them will cost you 1K new. Could save you lots of money. If it's a good one this could be a great find. Having spent loads sorting out my '44 I can't recommend a proper inspection highly enough.

Wot he said ^^^^^^^^

Get it checked, S engines can cost a fortune. Also some odd bits for the S are more expensive than a Lux such as water pumps.

I second what they both said, unless you know the intricacies of the porsche engine you gotta get it looked over or have some deep pockets in reserve for these faults like sticky this and smokey that. Jon Mitchell is the man to talk to about anything 944's.
I'm picking mine up this weekend :bounce: and Jon's practically rebuilt the engine but at least I have the reassurance it's going to work properly. Jon's link again http://www.jmgarage.com/

I know he's got an '86 turbo with Jon's very own 80,000 mile turbo engine transplanted into it at the moment and the 8v turbo engine is less temperental than the 16v ones if I remember rightly. Someone else might be able to confirm that, I don't know much about the loud bit's at the front.

my 944S has slightly sticky/jerky accelerator action if you try to drive it gently, so to coin a phrase drive it like you stole it !!

Can very often be the start of the AFM dying. Mine was much smoother after I'd changed mine.

but at last MOT co2 levels etc all ok
