Hi guys, Im not into BMWs even M3s Im afraid, yes i know they are great cars but not for me. I have owned a BMW Z4M and used to drive an Alpina but there is something about the BMW looks and drive that i dont enjoy. If i was going that route it would be a slightly later car anyway. Each to their own! :)

Re Enthusiast owned - this is my preferred route especially if a good S2 (or potential to be good) comes up.

Im tooled up with buyers checklist, endoscope, magnet etc (can you tell Ive bought too many cars over the years)

Thanks to all, yes Pauly "purchase strategy" was just an attention seeking tag line to get some interest/response, what it should've said was help needed in making a slightly more sensible decision
Well I have to admit I'm still undecided, maybe I should just go for the 1997 2.2 VTEC Prelude, seems like a safer bet  ok ok I'm joking... I think!

I'd buy an M3 ahead of any 944 except a turbo, and I'm not joking...

Being an M3 owner now I would recheck the values.

If you did your research I apologise, but it seems alot of people buy these thinking they are £6k for a good one and not much more than a 3 series in terms of running costs.

The OP was suggesting £10k, and as it happens I did plenty of research on M3 running costs around 8 years ago when I very nearly bought a absolutely mint E36 with 40k on it from a retired guy I knew. He used to run his own bodyshop and also worked for BMW. The thing that ultimately stopped me buying it was it was black and I knew it would be a PITA to keep it looking pristine. That and I favoured the power delivery of a similar output 944 turbo.
