Do all turbo boxes suffer reliability issues sooner or later with the turbo engine?

His car was a n/a and from what I read the stock box wasn't too bad till the power was upped, then he used the dogbox as its apparently very strong but its killed that

I guess my thinking is the turbo box is capable of holding more torque than the NA, so on the V8 it's a no brainer which one to use, i have no other option really.

turbo boxes are pretty strong.

sumpcrackers car was over 350bhp and the n/a box lasted a while before giving up. he fitted a dogleg which are good boxes, but he blew up the reverse gear as he dumped the clutch in reverse which will blow any box up!

turbo box will be well up to the job of this n/a v8 engine, lots of 944 turbos running 350-400bhp and similar torque with no issues.

I'll second that. You don't hear of much trouble with turbo boxes and generally known to be good for up to 400 horses. I snapped the cooler on mine (more than once  ) and drove it about 15 miles home with little or no g/box oil. Although was noisy as soon as I fixed the cooler and re-filled the box it was silent again. They are very sturdy.

Good to hear, for a moment there i was worried the turbo box wasn't going to hold up on my V8 either.

My Turbo gearbox had done 120,000 miles and did nearly 10,000 miles with a 400bhp/ 480lbft engine up front.

The engine popped before the gearbox did so I shouldn't worry Woodsport :)

So the last bits of the exhaust system arrived and i've now completed the final fabrication, everything is tacked together in the right place, hangers made too. This now needs removing for Tig welding, add my two lambda bosses and it can go back on for the final time.

What will it sound like? We will have to see, i have more silencing than some V8's, less than others.

Absolutely love the tail pipes, although the rear valence is going to need work to give them a little more breathing space, i will work on that during the bodywork phase.

You can see my reasons for relocating the fuel tank now, this engine wants and deserves a twin system like this.

Still a long way to go but this is a big milestone.

More 944 shenannigans.... my custom made fuel tank is now fitted, i had to make new bracketry for it and it still needs boxing in but it is in place, it protrudes into the boot by 5", so i am going to box that area in neatly and i have plenty of burgundy carpet to make a factory looking job of it.

Ok so a little more progress, i decided not to use Porsches gearbox hanger bracket, mine was rusty and quite frankly looked weak as piss, so i built my own using box section...

Image

This is much stronger than the original and has crush tubes inside the box.

I then decided to give the gearbox some lateral bracing, i read about people going solid mount and having huge vibrations through the chassis, well that isn't for me, so my attempt to tighten things up at the rear is two stabiliser links, hung from my new crossmember and tied into the gearbox casing, these should help to keep things steadier with the V8 without transmitting vibration.

Have i got this right? Well we will have to see, it's certainly better than nothing and won't harm anything.

will be interesting to hear how you get on with the new gearbox hanger, how long did it take to do?

Just a few hours with the plasma cutter, i do this for a living so it's no big deal really. We did notice how much less we could physically move the gearbox afterwards, it's still hanging from its original rubber block but is stabilized both sides now to prevent it from jumping around under load.

It will be interesting to see how well it works out.

For the time being, but not abandoned, my garage workload has gone insane with a 6 month waiting list for my engine conversions, so the 948 has been put into storage until i am free to work on her again.
