I also e-mailed the op about the machined parts with a view to doing my own, but since I am the owner of an engineering company I can make virtually anything I need . I am still thinking of doing a set but need to know were to get the inserts and the cost because the bilstein legs are available from Demon Tweeks at a discounted price so it needs to be worthwhile .

I managed to pick up a couple of Golf MK2 struts yesterday as I heard nothing back about the inserts and I'm going to weld them up today to allow use of the threaded insert gland, I'll show the results later. I will be using the Spax adjustable inserts that I already have as Demon Tweeks have not got back to me about a replacement yet.

I got the Golf threaded section welded to the 944S strut top successfully today and now I can use the adjustable Spax for an early 944 I bought a few weeks ago. The normal restoration of the car can carry on once again.

I just need to get the struts to the powder coater tomorrow for blasting and colour.

That's the way I did it a few years back - a snug sleeve fit aren't they :)

I did this conversion on my S2 over the weekend, but took a slightly different approach.

When I measured things up, dropping the early shocks into the late tubes resulted in the suspension leg being 12mm longer, than a complete crimped leg, the extra 12mm was above the spring plate, so had potential to reduce travel, may have been an issue, may not...

I stripped the early slider of all brackets, spring plate etc, so all I was left with was the tube.

Then cut the top 50mm from the crimped leg and removed all the old shock components.

This is where I differed, I machined the bottom out of the late model leg, leaving a register for the early tube to slide into, This meant I had things perfectly centred top and bottom, and the correct tube diameters to centre the early type shock insert.

Measured things up so I got the same dimensions as the late leg, resulted in the early tube protruding about 6mm below the hub mounting, and in total the lower floor of the tube is 12mm below the crimped original.

Finally I welded the whole lot together top and bottom.

The only downside I have is increased unsprung weight, which I can't really see being a problem on a road car.

Interesting. Given the reputation of Bilstein then I can't see that that 12mm would be an issue but I like your approach. You clearly have more of an engineering workshop at your disposal than most.

How is the car with the Bilsteins fitted?

Oli.

With the Spax inserts I used, I only have about 4mm extra at the top, there still won't be much chance of it bottoming out even with lowered springs.

The front inserts are stamped TAG1022 and are the top adjustable type, the whole kit = front adj shocks/-30mm springs and rear adj shocks is TAP314.

The missus will be using the car in the week and I'll probably do a couple of track days in it so I wanted something adjustable and not too expensive.

I just thought I would update that I got my struts back from the powder coater on Monday and everything (including the Spax inserts) is now fitted back to the car and at long last the wheels have touched the floor for the first time in four months.

I know that feeling. How does it handle now?

I'm not sure yet, it'll be another couple of weeks before it hits the road, got a few more jobs to do first.
