Spare wheel is 26 years old in mine. Don't think I would trust it. Tyre weld has got me out of trouble in the past.

Has anyone got any idea how much a new tyre costs?

I made enquiries 5 years ago. The tyre manufacturer (Vredestein) won't sell them to any of the "normal" tyre fitting companies so they're only available through Porsche. Porsche sell it as complete replacement wheel, not tyre only. Porsche Reading quoted me £360 for a replacement.

I laughed.

Are you kidding me? I'd have laughed then told them to go forth and multiply. That is ridiculous! I bought all 4 tyres for my car for less than that!

I carry my 24 year old emergency wheel and compresor, with doubts as to if it would inflae if required. I must get some aerosol cans.

Minwe spare has never been used,

If you has no spare and have AA relay - you could have car lifted to nearest Porsche dealer and buy a new tyre.

I bought some gunk for my mondeo then read that it ruins the wheel and tyre fitters don't like the mess it makes.

I carry the spare (space saver) and have used it. You know that a can of tyre weld would be fine for 9999 out of 10000 journeys but when you need four operational wheels on your car then you tend to need them quite badly ....

Oh and if you have never tried inflating the spare wheel then you should, partially to make sure that it and the compressor works and partially because the inflating of the tyre is a sight to behold! On the occasion I used mine I drove to a local tyre repair place who fixed the puncture in the regular tyre. I deflated the space-saver spare and realised while I was doing so that there were three tyre fitters standing around me, marvelling at what was happening! The tyre circumference changes as it is inflated (or deflated) and the movement of the side walls is quite spectacular - it's certainly worth 20 minutes of playing around with on a Saturday afternoon!

Oli.
