Seems my big old Bosch battery has suddenly run out of puff. I'm thinking of a lighter alternative to keep on with the weight savings project - so whose running a Varley Red Top 25 or alternative in something that's not a race car?

My car's running a chipped 2.5 16v with lighter weight flywheel & clutch - no AC just PS.

We run powervamp in all or old race and trackday cars, no issues at all ever.

Running an Odyssey 925 for 3 years without issue. In fact I wish I went smaller to save more weight. Car can sit for many weeks and starts on the button. Never drained on its own accord.

Thanks guys.

I'll look into the Powervamp range. I recall seeing them somewhere.

That Odyssey 925 is virtually 12kgs - the Varley 25 is only 7 but 20Ah and 230CCA - is the difference worth the risk of not firing up the 2.5?

Don't waste your money, so-called 'motorsport' batteries are just jazzed up AGM leisure batteries. I run a Lucas AGM golf cart battery on my 951 and it works a treat. You'll need a proper digital charger as any equipment will drain it in a week or so if parked up, but the same goes for an Odessey or Varley. The best bit? The only cost around £35. I drilled and cut the posts off an old battery and bolted them on to the new battery to retain my original cable terminals.

This is what I have, it's very light!! https://www.tayna.co.uk/Lucas-Golf-Batt ... P7938.html

If the wiring is like my Escort there will be no drain at all if the stereo etc. is off.

A handy thing to remember about the golf cart battery :).

How quickly do your cars start up with them? I know a friend's MGB on a 123 distributor was very difficult to start as the voltage drop below 10 when cranking, enough for the distributor to no longer work. It would turn over just about.

No difference to the mahoosive lead acid battery it replaced. If he's having an issue starting it's probably an earth fault, not the battery. That is unless it's a high compression engine perhaps?

To be fair I think it may have been running more compression. That and the starter motor predates geared items ; they had a direct drive starter motor on them.
