My car is a Jan 86 registration, very early '86 model year. It is an oval dash, and has the 86 model year only narrow track shared with square dash but with alloy front wishbones and no ABS spec. This is the fabled 85.5 model, but owes little to the '85 and is basically an '86 onwards 2.5.

No, its a 1986(MY). The foolish 1985.5 nomenclature was dreamed up by the American importers because collectively, theyre all too dumb to grasp the model year concept. :D

Thanks, I sit corrected (and suitably chastised but wiser) :) . I must admit that I thought the idea of a "cross-over" model between square and oval dash seemed somewhat unlikely.

I guess that the chances of finding a series 2 car registered in the UK before 31/12/85 are pretty remote - would anybody know how many there were ?

There are actually quite a few. If it is a C registered 1985 944 then it will almost always be a series two. I own a series one on a C and they are extremely few and far between.

I wasn't chastising you btw, although I am aware that I come across like a strict schoolmaster...

Did you buy the harness bar that I put you onto through Pistonheads? I spoke to Hadyn about them recently and he re-conformed his £100-price, after stating a while ago that it would be £200-ish (and having definitely quoted £100-ish initially).

Yes, I realise mine is an '86 model, I was just using it as an example.

The Yanks, BTW, are masters of the model year, without the silly misleading date specific registration number system we have here. Their manufacturers traditionally work from September to July.

No, I haven't done so yet. I'm currently having second thoughts about how far to go with my car due to all the electrical gremlins which keep cropping up. Sort one thing only for another to rear its ugly head. I guess that a series 2's electrics would at least be easier to work on, given the relocation of the fuse box. Are series 2 electrics considered to be better, worse or much the same - compared to series 1 ?

SO much better. He can make it suitable for bolting on too, which would make it easier to transfer.
