So, the car's been like this since involved had it - the pedal travel for the first inch or so seems to be simply spring pressure, not much but just enough to hold it up against a stop. Push it past that point and you can feel it's the clutch spring you're working against until you get to the bite point.

Is that first bit of travel normal or can it be adjusted out?

Mine's like that, don't know if it's normal, though.

you can adjust most of that out with an adjuster at the clutch pedal -bit of a sod to reach, you need to be upsidedown

As far as I'm aware, the inch or so of spring slack on initially depressing the clutch pedal (I think this is what you are describing), is the distance of travel prior to the master cylinder piston rod engaging pressure within the master cylinder itself. You can reduce the this by adjusting the thread length on the master cylinder pedal connector block. Slacken off the lock nut and then spanner turn the tread to suit the reduction length. However, you must have a bit of prior 'slack' (play) within this initial travel. ie the pedal mustn't be 'solid', otherwise this will affect the pressure on the clutch itself. I have replaced the master cylinder on mine and the last bit of fine adjustment is important.
Only adjust length 'A' ! 'B' is a factory setting and shouldn't have to be touched!

I had an issue with my clutch pedal when I bought the car. When I put it in for service at a Porsche Indy - without my asking - they said we fixed your clutch pedal now it moves okay.

They said there is a common problem caused by - someone in the past jacking the car up in the wrong place which bends the floor under the clutch pedal. They remedied that by flattening the floor out with a mallet. Clutch pedal movement has been okay since,

Just a quick update on this one...

I spent an hour on my back under the steering wheel trying to see why it was slack. Well, in the drawing above the item in 'B' appears to be - unless anyone can tell me better - a small damper to smooth the return rate of the clutch pedal. What you can't see is that the uppermost part of the lever arm is stopped from hammering into the upper part of the bulkhead by a small rubber grommet. My grommet had become squashed and deformed by the pressure of the lever arm, effectively allowing the pedal to come further back than it should.

I had a small sheet of hard rubber that was maybe 5mm thick - I cut two10mm squares of this sheet and stuck them together with some super-strong double sided tape, then I pulled what was left of the grommet out of the mounting and used more tape to stick the new thicker wad in its place.

Result: 95% of the dead slack has gone and I can feel the clutch spring proper almost as soon as I tread on the pedal. It took a few days to get used to the 'new' feel, but now it's absolutely spot on.
