I am looking to do the belts on my 944 s2. Does anyone have the timing tools I can hire or any advice on where to get them from?

Hi - you don't need timing tools as such as there are timing marks stamped onto all the relevant pulleys. The only belt issue you might have is making sure the balance shaft belt is tensioned properly, but the cam belt has an automatic tensioner - well, mine did anyway...

My car was mostly stripped at the front so I used that opportunity to improve access by removing the radiators and cooling system, which also allowed me to get to the pulley bolts with a windy-gun and then use a puller to help persuade them off altogether. It makes it easier to see what you're doing for the re-install too.

I am not sure as if you don't need the timing tools. I would say the flywheel lock is almost necessary. Remember that the pulley on 944s is very tight and needs to drive the oil pump. There are plenty of threads to testify that.

Some may disagree here, but the timing belt can be check via the usual methods as on other cars IMO although this opinion does vary. The balance belt is the tricky one. Almost all of the none specialists belts I have heard have whined louder than superchargers. Some do seem to have sucess with a variety of other methods though (the twist method but varied for more twist, feeler blades). That is the tricky one.

A 944 belt looks super easy in comparison to my new daily which will be 5 years old in a few days...

Some might say you can get away with an allen key in the flywheel ...

To lock the fly I remove one of the flywheel timing ring bolts and use a longer bolt (m8 I think) to bolt up a socket to act as a locking tool against the bell housing. There's a tdc timing mark on the crank pulley so you only need to lock the crank to undo/re-torque the pulley.
