 Post subject: Strange temp guage - jumps to max on ignition on

TIPEC membership: 944
Ok this symptom suddenly appeared this afternoon after working perfectly this morning: on ignition on the temp guage needle jumps up to the max position and stays there. Running doesn't seem to be effected.

Any idea why it would suddenly start doing this?
