Had a look at the car today, it seems the system is empty of fluid now. I'm assuming there's a leak somewhere but would that explain why I had a noise coming from the PS pump initially? I'm going to be checking the system for leaks, are there any common places to check? I'm hoping the rack is okay and I've got a perished pipe of some sort.

Any of the pipes / unions could be leaking.. - I'd expect it to be pretty messy underneath, so might be hard to find until you clean it up.

Take a look at the parts diagram to get an idea of how it all goes together. Do you have a copy of PET?

Just to keep you guys updated:

I cleaned the two pipes under the reservoir as they were caked in crud, tightened up the clamps and filled up the system. After turning lock to lock to get rid of any air I topped it up again and it all seems to be fine for now. Obviously I'll keep an eye on the level over the next few days as the core of the issue is still unexplained. Hopefully it stays okay...

On a side note I now have a PS Pump with all new seals for sale!

Keep on to the pump for a while yet. Leaking from hose is common issue normally solved by cutting hose down an inch

T3rra is quite right, the leaking hose problem can be overcome by cutting the top of the hose down a bit. It appears that the hose starts to perish and the reinforcement breaks down, so even if the clamps are tight the fluid slowly weeps out. :( However, the top of the hose is a slightly moulded design, so once you cut the hose, it is a real pain to easily refit over the reservoir outlet! Been there - done that...

New hoses from OPC are very expensive. If I hadn't cured my leaks I was going to go to my local hydraulic pipe specialist and have some custom-made at a lower cost. ATF is horrible stuff to have leaking out..gets everywhere  .

I would hold onto the pump too, as it is always good to have a working spare part...just in case.
