Just wanted to check with the experts here that water pump 944.106.003.00 is compatible with my 1989 2.7 944.

Many thanks,

Dave

Yes, that's the 2.7/3.0 water pump , which is what you need.
The earlier 2.5 one will fit but has a smaller impeller.

That's a relief - just bought a unit and was having a panic attack I'd bought the wrong one. Been searching for months but got a good deal on a new, Porsche unit through fleabay.

Finally getting the parts together to do pump, belts, oil seals, etc. I have been told to replace balance shaft and camshaft top hats and oil pump drive sleeve too but wasn't sure if I should routinely replace these items or only if they are worn??

Also the car has about 118k on it and has been running fine. Should the head gasket be replaced at this sort of mileage as a precaution??? I keep hearing about them failing so would appreciate any advice on this too.

Regarding the Head Gasket replacement not sure about whether mileage is the issue bit FWIW I was advised to have mine change after 10 years.

The Engine was new Blueprint (318 BHP Turbo) rebuild in 2005 so had mine changed in 2013 (ie 8 years old) along with 2nd lot of Belts/Water Pump to be on the safe side rather than leaving it until 12 years old when next lot of belts are due. (New Engine has only done 17,000miles so being ultra safe rather than sorry)

I can't find any record of the gasket being replaced at any time in the past. Compression very good and runs fine, but better safe than sorry I guess. Could do without the extra cost on top of all the other items but for peace of mind, will change it - would be gutted it if failed after all the other work!

Knowing whats been done and more importantly what has NOT been done is one of the problems with these old cars.
Assuming you have bought it to keep a fair while then at least you'l have peace of mind and know it should be good for many years. I'm of the opinion that it's worth spending the money on keeping the car well maintained rather than risking what could be a very expensive blow up!

I am putting together parts to change belts tensioners, pulleys, tophats, water pump etc. I too have no record of a head gasket change.
I should do this at the same time but, this involves a great undertaking.
Head skim, new tappets or as required, valves, valve guides, re lapping in valves, new or as required valve springs, new tensioner chain new slipper pads.
We are talking at least 1000 pounds on top of what is required to change front of engine seals water pump and belts.

All this against the value of the car and without any labour charges added in, thing is I know it needs doing so it will eventually get done!

Let us know the full undertaking as I may be asking advice.

Regards

Mark

I have decided to definitely do the head gasket. I totally understand re. costs vs value of the car. Although values are still fairly low (but slowly rising), there is just no way around the maintenance regardless. I guess for me it is a bit of a labour of love and re-kindling of an old hobby.

Besides, fingers crossed it won't need doing for a very long time after that.

There are some very good how-to You tube videos for pump, belts and seals

Still gathering all the parts at the moment and having a monumental clear-out of the garage, but will let you know how it goes.
