They can be cheap to buy but I wouldn't buy a cheapy unless you are handy with the spanners and have a grand or 2 put aside.

I just wish Dave had bought a turbo

He has an aversion to us artificially 'blown' boys

Mind you he seems to do very well indeed with the infinite lag of a N/A motor and as we all know it is 95% driver and only 5% equipment when you are really trying.

Chris. If thats over your budget then you can't afford an S2. You will soon spend 2K on a 4 grand S2 & you won't be close to Big Daves. I bought a tidy lux for 3.5. Thinking that another lux I found for 5K was a bit steep. (This was a couple of years ago.) It had had big money spent & a good service record. Looking back I wish that I had spent a bit more at the start & bought the other one as I have spent more than 3K getting the cheaper one up to scratch. I'm not quite there yet. The engine rebuild in Big Daves will be worth 5K alone. New cams are big money. Most have got to the age were they need them. Snap it up. It will save you loads I promice. Miss it & you will never find another. :) Good luck!

Your advice about buying the best I can is most probably true and I am most probably getting my self into a real pickle not spending £6k on one, but I cant afford 6k so am going to try buy the best one I can that is in my budget which is £4k (if big dave wants to sell me his for £4k then i will happliy buy it!). I know the car I get will probably need some work and I accept that, it isnt a daily driver and fully plan to spend quite a few weekends tinkering with bits and bobs over the next few years but so be it. I am not a qualified mechanic but have a degree in mech eng and understand the principles of it all and have done a lot with older MGs and Triumphs so have a fairly good base knowledge.

I really hope you are all wrong about the chances of me getting a good one for £4k but I accept you are probably right!!

Regards

Chris

its possible you will find a good s2 for that price but it would be better to search for a needle in a hey stack, most owners as i have found out this weekend love their cars to bits and know the value. they would also know how much or how little they have thrown at it and consider that in the price.
i like the s2 but apart from the 16v engine i would have a s1 any day even a 2.5 and thats after or while i own a 300bhp twinturbo gto. which i would gladly part with to change to a 944.

Ok ok having slept on it and having a good think, I am going to take all of your advice and stop looking for a Porsche at the moment, I really want an S2 as i like the way they look (but dont like turbo cars) so I am going to save some more to get a budget closer to £6k together and then look again to get a really good example.

Not going to dissapear though keep talking to me even though I am not a porsche owner!

Regards

Chris

I think you're wise - keep looking, though. You might find the perfect car comes along whilst you're saving! Don't forget that prices are still dropping, at least the price you need to sell at is dropping....

There are some good points made about buying the best. If you take the advice that an average well-bought S2 will cost around £1.5 k in bills over a year, your £4k car will actually cost you £5.5k. Puts Dave's £6k car into perspective!

There have been examples of cars with the major mechanicals, bodywork or both full sorted and they don't make a huge premium over a car that screams "moneypit". It's your gain that someone has spent a load of money on the car and then chooses to lose that investment by selling it!

Agree with paul. But you just might come across a nut & bolt rebuilt lux/2.7/twincam S/Turbo while your waiting. A near perfect lux recently sold for 3.5 on piston heads. The guy had spent over 5 on the engine & gearbox alone. it had been bear shelled & repainted properly. They do pop up now & again. Sometimes the owner just has to sell fast & you can get a 7K car for 4. So keep looking. No rush. :)

Cheers chaps for the nice comments about my car....
It makes it easier for me to part with, as i have lavished a HUGE amount of time , let alone money on this car.Ive also had some very memorable times with it....

Just to back things up.. If you were to buy a so called £4K car. Then take it your local specialist, [ as you will need to at some point, as something WILL break that you cant fix yourself], then the £4K car will definately NOT be a £4K anynmore...But a lot more....££££££££££

I looked at a lot of "so called" good but cheaper cars before i bought mine... And to say they were mostly rubbish is a understatement...
All i can say is , i bought a good, well looked after car for GOOD money. I then set about sorting it for my intended use...costing £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££.
SOMEBODY will definately get a VERY good FULLY sorted car ...GUARENTEED...

Or you could always look for a cheaper one like mine that's already had a load spent on it, and still save some of your budget for future expenditure - I think it's perfect as a daily driver (but then I would say that)
